InfluencesFILMS FROM NKCC 2006:

“The Music and Dances of the Awudome Villages”

This project was commissioned by a group of elders in the Awudome villages in the Volta Region of Ghana, West Africa. The traditional music and dances of this rural area are waning. During three weeks of filming, Nat documented hours of dance and interviews. The resulting 10-minute film is a visual feast of colorful social dance, and a snapshot of a community in transition. “Music and Dances of the Awudome Villages” was recently accepted to the Santa Cruz Film Festival (April 2007).

“Rodney & Helen: Fast Times in Las Vegas”

As a young boy, Nat learned the basics of song-craft from his uncle Rodney Bolloni. Though very different in style, Rodney’s music deeply affected the development of Hot Buttered Rum. In the late 1970s Rodney and wife Helen were at the forefront of the swinging Las Vegas lounge singing scene. This 5-minute film shows the rise and fall of these cultural icons, with footage from 30 years of amazing music. PG-13.

“Nat Keefe Concert Carnival”

This CD was recorded live on December 20, 2006 at the Independent in San Francisco, CA. It features artists from the Mother Hips, ALO, New Monsoon, Everyone Orchestra, Earthcapades, and Hot Buttered Rum. The show also featured Ghanaian dance, juggling performance, a riveting performance by the amazing Rodney Bolloni, as well as two short films, both of which can be seen here on the Myspace page. With Nat Keefe, Tim Bluhm, Sharon Gilchrist, Matt Butler, Bo Carper, Uncle Rodney, Dan Lebowitz, Bryan Horne, Grandpa Buz, Steve Adams, Aaron Redner, Perry Sayoma Quarshie, Zac Matthews, Phil Ferlino & Erik Yates. Available on iTunes.com and cdbaby.com.

“Music for Ordinary Motion”

This CD shows the breadth of Nat’s music, featuring music in many configurations: percussion ensemble, bluegrass band, xylophone duet, symphony orchestra, solo guitar, a capella quartet, string trio, rock n roll band, flute/tabla/guitar, and voice/piano/baritone sax. The CD was recorded in studio and live performances in 2000. It features the earliest studio recording of Hot Buttered Rum and early versions of songs that have become HBR classics. Sheet music is available for much of the music here. All profits from this CD go to benefit the Children in Need Foundation in Accra, Ghana.

“GHANA Boko Paa 1999”

Nat’s first excursion to Ghana yielded this collection of field recordings and sound collages. The CD celebrates the diversity of music and instruments of this small West African country: the xylophone virtuosity of Rallio Kapakpul; the soulful singing of Amadou; the sophisticated polyrhythmic drumming of Obo Addy; the charming palmwine highlife groove of TO Jazz. It also features two sound collages: “Water” weaves together the sounds of the same phrase being said in more than three dozen languages; “Elmina Dungeons” explores the legacy of trans-Atlantic slavery. Made possible with a grant from the Academic Affairs Board of Lewis & Clark College. All profits from this CD go to benefit the Children in Need Foundation in Accra, Ghana.

12/15/08 - Preview From Concert Carnival Central

Whew. No matter how well you plan, the week before a big show is busy. I'm excited by the way Concert Carnival is going. I am supported by some of the best performers and crew, people have been stepping up and some things are coming together that I could never have imagined. Such a mandala offering: it's only going to play out once, this Saturday!

Here's a preview of a few of the numbers:

1) Polish video artist Pawel Kruk is premiering a short, "ScreenTest."

2) Hoop dancer Laura Blakeman of Shakti SunFire is going to be there. You might know her from epic nights onstage with String Cheese Incident at Horning's Hideout and Hot Buttered Rum at Yarmony Fest.

3) It will be interesting to see what Matt Eakle (David Grisman Quintet) and Sean Hutchinson (New Monsoon, Dave Brogan) do together. Sean is coming out from New York City for the NKCC! I've admired Matt's flute playing with DGQ for years.

4) The Hella Fools are going to be in the house. The only required homework for the Concert Carnival is to see their youtube.

5) I haven't been allowed to see any of the rehearsal for the Whipped Cream and Coconuts Burlesque troupe. Who's been naughty and nice?

6) There are new and old songs to be sung by a several people: Nicki Bluhm, Zac Matthews, John McGaraghan, Forerst Sun, Josh Brough, Santa Claus.

7) I just signed up Tiffany Typhoony to come do facepainting for performers and audience. Tiffany is an accomplished makeup and costume artist, known in California for her work with Wavy Gravy's Camp WinnaRainbow. She'll be set up in the house before the show and during setbreak to paint peoples' faces for tips. DRESS TO THE NINES! Soiree Cabaret Attire. That means you too, Eaton. Dress code will be enforced by Santa's Sexy Helpers.

Personal recommendation. 1) Get a drink before the show at Mini Bar SF (you can google this, too) which is just a block away. 2) Eat dinner at the Herbivore, across the street 3) stay at the Metro Hotel, a few blocks away. Does that sound like a metrosexual San Francisco evening or what?
