Bio
Tristano Veneto, better known as the "Mad Scientist" is a British-Italian music producer, who currently lives in Queens, New York. Mad Scientist or simply "Mad" as he is commonly referred to, is a producer, engineer and co-owner/founder of First City Records and DontSleepNYC.com. The name "Mad Scientist" originated from his obsessive work ethic, his sometimes bad temper and being "always in the lab, making music". The name was given to him by First City member MC Germz (Young Tallest), and is also a reference to some of his reggae/dub influences - artists such as Scientist, and Mad Cobra. Prior to 2010, Mad went by the name Nato and was credited as such on all previous releases. Born in West London, Mad is of mixed British, Roman and Southern Italian descent. He grew up both in Italy and England, speaking Italian first and then learning English later while growing up in South West London. Mad spent much of his childhood and teenage years moving back and forth between the Italy and the UK. While studying photography at art school, Mad became more interested in music and began attending and promoting music events both in the UK and in Italy. Mad would later attend SAE (School of Audio Engineering) in East London, and graduate from the Institute of Audio Research in New York City in 2006. An internship at New York City's Z Music Studios followed, where Mad learned to engineer and mix in a professional studio environment under the supervision of "Dan the Man," whose clients include Lil' Kim, Maino, Uncle Murder and Boot Camp Click, among many others. Around this time Mad began to apply what he was learning to his own productions and formed the First City crew with MC Kush, MC -Swift, King Colby and DJ Bookz. Throughout 2007, Mad continued to co-produce for First City with DJ Bookz. First City became the first American based music collective to produce UKG/Grime music in the United States, with Mad debuting his production skills on the group's first release "Kings of New York". The mixtape's title is a reference to the movie King of New York, and the fact they had become the undisputed kings of UK Grime music in America. Among many of the tracks produced by Mad, the mixtape's standouts are"Koniesha" and "Envy", which became street anthems, demonstrating Mad's dark, hyper and angry grime/rap hybrid that became his trademark sound at the time. In December of 2007, Mad and the First City crew were featured on Love Xmas in New York, a special 5 day BBC 1xtra show that broadcasted live to the UK from NYC. Other artists featured on the Love Xmas in New York show included UK singer/rapper Estelle and R & B artist J. Holiday. During much of 2008 and early 2009, First City went on to dominate New York's underground music scene and performed at many of NYC's legendary music venues and institutions, including opening for Skream at NYC's Knitting Factory. In 2009, First City expanded and became affliated with London based Grime crew "Locked and Loaded". Mad continued to produce for First City and also began producing for Locked and Loaded crew members Snoopy Montana, Germz (Young Tallest) and DZA. At this time Mad's collaborations with Snoopy, Germz and DZA began to get regular air play on London's infamous underground music radio station Rinse FM. Also during this time, Mad expanded his own range of skills by working on recording sound for advertising film shoots, music video film shoots, and short film shoots, and scoring with his own production and dancehall instrumental for a video featured on XXL Magazine's website. The First City crew disbanded in early 2010, after which Mad and fellow producer Bookz decided to continue First City as an independent record label. Mad later went on to create DontSleepNYC.com with Bookz and fellow producer Max Echo. Mad released his debut solo project, the double instrumental Grimey Bashment EP, in the summer of 2010. It showcased a handful of Mad's new music style, turning away from the darker grime sound to a more party friendly vibe, and mixing Jamaican dancehall with elements of UKG music. Grimey Bashment EP or "GBEP" as it is referred to, received much critical acclaim and even charted high among industry heavyweights such as Major Lazer and Vybz Kartel on online music store websites. Most recently, Mad has been working on "Insomnia: No rest for the Wicked" - the latest mixtape from First City Records/DontSleepNYC. Due for release in late December 2010, the mixtape will showcase Mad's latest productions along with remixes of some of the underground music scene's most exciting and talented artists from London, Jamaica, and NYC. Also in production, is the third and final chapter in the top selling Grimey Bashment Trilogy, scheduled for release on First City Records in the Spring of 2011. What can we expect to see from Mad Scientist in 2011 and beyond? As usual, Mad will be hard at work selling top quality beats to his international clientel including artists from the Caribbean, USA, Canada, Australia, Poland, the UK and beyond. Expect to see many more credits added to his already extensive list in the coming years. Mad also has plans to DJ, and will continue to host and promote events with DontSleepNYC, which has already started to dominate the NYC underground music scene.
