Biography

NAVEL: The story of three young lads that don’t need any proof that rock is dead or not. Whether the Blues is beyond dead or here to stay. The history of these three lads is not a fancy biography but a cheap one hurridly scribbled with lipstick on the walls of a backroom toilet: NAVEL. Are here to stay. They play ROCK, even though it’s dead. They play the blues while others fumble their balls. Kill rock stars. Save the great white shark!»

NAVEL’s second album saw the light shortly before their label declared bankruptcy, which was a slap in the face but also mirrored the state of the music industry at the end of 2010. Nothing is all right – at the same time everything’s OK. Never has it been so logical to simply do whatever has to be done. Whatever feels right to do. ́Cos no one gives a toss anyway. NAVEL’s 2nd album NEO NOIR was completely re-recorded in the summer of 2010. A fever was the cause, the wild hinterland, in the Valley of Laufen, Switzerland, the place. Songs where pulled from the lakes of Finland. Lyics dug up from the woods. All mixed by Jari Antti of NAVEL.

NAVEL was once a fantasy during a paper round. A three piece delusion on a conveyor belt in Laufen, Switzerland. In 2007 NAVEL toured Germany with Queens Of The Stone Age. In 2008 NAVEL released their debut with Frozen Souls. 2009 NAVEL played at SXSW in Austin/Texas. And is awarded with the Pop-Preis in Basel, Switzerland. 2010 NAVEL is in shambles. Lawyers knocking on the door asking for money. NAVEL are skint. Standstill. Summer of 2010, NAVEL is now on NOIS-O-LUTION Records, Berlin, Germany. So NEO NOIR is the story of the three friends that make a record. Their second. NEO NOIR is black and new. Neon light and film noir. Water and wine. Birth and death. Fever and darkness. The high-class Digipack Artwork is made by the swiss Artists, Alchemist and Photographer Reto Rigassi. In his very own style he is integrating the photographed motives in the technical process of film developing. Destructive, morbid, dark – same as this acoustic blues-doom-rock-monster NEO NOIR. Biographie

NAVEL haben Rock, Noise, Blues, Punk geschnupft, aufgesogen und inhaliert und dort gelernt, wo er herkommt und hingehört: 250 Konzerte in der Schweiz, Deutschland, England, den USA, Frankreich... vom kleinen Club ins Vorprogramm der Großen des Rock. Sie sind gewachsen, haben sich neuentdeckt und neuerfunden. Und in einem schmerzhaften Prozess ist unter widrigsten Umständen NEO NOIR entstanden. Wer geglaubt hat, dass diese Band untergeht, wird dieses Comeback fürchten lernen: Verzerrte Gitarren-Wände, wie sie die Reid-Brüder in ihren besten Zeiten spielten, heulende Mundharmonika-Tupfer und Feedback Orgien. Eine Produktion, die keinen High-End-Anspruch verfolgt, sondern authentisch einen eigenen Weg geht. Es wird kompromisslos der Platz genutzt, der sich seitlich der Hauptverkehrsstraßen, auf denen Musik heute gefahren wird, bietet. NAVEL transportieren Blues – oder das, was sie dafür halten – ins Hier und Jetzt. Und NEO NOIR ist ein Urvieh von einem Blues-Doom-Rockmonster: dunkel, morbide, bedrückend und zerstörerisch. Zeitgemäß und doch voller musikalischer Zitate und ehrfürchtiger Verneigungen vor glorreichen Epochen der Rockmusik. NAVEL: Are Back.

2003 gegründet während eines Ferienjobs in einer Fabrik in Laufen. 2007 mit Queens Of The Stone Age auf Tour. 2008 das Debut «Frozen Souls», gefeiert vom Punk-Fanzine bis zu den Musikseiten im Feuilleton. Touren durch Europa bis hin zum SXSW Festival in Austin/Texas und zuhause mit dem Basler Pop-Preis ausgezeichnet. Anfang 2010 hatten NAVEL ihr zweites Album fertig aufgenommen, bevor das Label seine Insolvenz bekanntgab. NAVEL standen vor dem Scherbenhaufen – kehrten ihn zusammen und nahmen alles komplett neu auf. Songs wurden in Finnland aus den Seen gefischt, Texte aus dem Wald ausgegraben. Alles unter eigener Regie und unter Fieber, körperlich am Ende selber produziert und gemischt. Der ewige Mythos Rockmusik neuerweckt, die bekannte Geschichte frisch erzählt - für sich selber und aus der Not. Und plötzlich scheinen es beste Voraussetzungen. 2011 kommt nun „NEO NOIR“. Neu und schwarz. Neonlicht und Film Noir. Geburt und Tod. Fieber und Finsternis. Rückblick und vorausschauend. Retro und zeitgemäss. Durch alle Ritzen schimmern die Vorbilder, Zitate und Hinweise. Und letztendlich spiegelt das Artwork auf perfekte Weise die Musik wider: Für das hochwertige konnte der Tessiner Fotograf und Künstler Reto Rigassi gewinnen. Er hebt die Grenze zwischen Motiv und Fotografie, Foto und Kunst, Künstler und Kunst auf, indem er die Motive das Foto direkt bearbeiten lässt. Landschafts-Fotografien lässt er vom Mondlicht entwickeln oder wie auf dem Coverbild, überlässt er die Fotos des untergehenden Venedigs dem salzigen Lagunen-Wasser zur «End-Bearbeitung». Ein alchemistisches, dunkles, morbides und zerstörerisches Szenario, künstlerisch und gegen den Strom. Eigenständig und anders. Wie NEO NOIR. Enjoy! Aufdrehen.
