NAWAL nace en 1.999 como una banda de reggae inspirada en los sonidos jamaiquinos de los años 70..s y 80..s. A lo largo de estos años la banda ha tenido varios cambios en sus integrantes y formato. Durante este proceso, NAWAL ha ido aumentando el enfoque y apoyo en el uso de la tecnología. El sonido de la banda ha evolucionado hasta encontrar su propia identidad y hoy se consolida quizás como la primer banda de Reggae Dub de COLOMBIA.
A pesar de tener pocos trabajos discográficos -un sencillo: NATIVA LIBRE, y un LP: EL FUEGO Y LA PALABRA-, NAWAL ya da de qué hablar a nivel nacional e internacional. La revista ROLLINGSTONE sitúa el LP EL FUEGO Y LA PALABRA en el puesto 32 entre las 50 mejores producciones discográficas que salieron en el mundo en el año 2.005. Por su parte la revista SEMANA lo ubica entre las 10 mejores producciones colombianas.
NAWAL ha participado en múltiples festivales de música dentro y fuera del país. Después de su gran presentación en ROCK AL PARQUE 2.005 ante más de 50.000 personas, el programa MUCHA MUSICA catalogó a NAWAL como la mejor banda nacional de éste festival. El mismo año la revista SHOCK los nominó a sus premios como mejor banda reggae.
Sus canciones han sido programadas en emisoras nacionales e internacionales. EL FUEGO Y LA PALABRA fue la segunda canción más pedida en la emisora RADIONICA de Bogotá en el año 2.005. Por otro lado, la canción LA MITAD DE LA HISTORIA hace parte de la banda sonora de la película de Dago García Mí abuelo, mí papá y yo.
NAWAL tambien ha tenido el privilegio de compartir escenario con artistas como MANU CHAO. La banda fue elegida para abrir el primer concierto de este grupo en Colombia de su ultima gira por Latino América.
NAWAL begins in 1.999 as a reggae band inspired by the Jamaican sounds of the 70..s and the 80..s. Since then NAWAL has gone trough several changes in both the bands sound and members. This process led to a particular interest in technology. The sound has evolved to the point where it has its own identity. Today many people consider NAWAL as the first reggae-dub band in Colombia.
Even though NAWAL has only released an EP NATIVA LIBRE and the debut album EL FUEGO Y LA PALABRA, the recognition of the band has been both local and international. ROLLINGSTONE magazine ranked EL FUEGO Y LA PALABRA as 32 in the top 50 of the best albums released worldwide in 2005. SEMANA magazine considered EL FUEGO Y LA PALABRA as one of the best ten productions in Colombia the same year.
NAWAL has participated in various music festivals both in Colombia and overseas. After headlining in ROCK AL PARQUE 2005 festival in front of more than 50.000 people, the TV program MUCH MUSIC selected NAWAL as the best local band of the festival. During the same year, the band was nominated at the SHOCK magazine Awards for Best Reggae Band.
NAWALs music is now being played in various countries. EL FUEGO Y LA PALABRA was the second most requested song of 2005 in RADIONICA radio station in Bogotá. Another song, LA MITAD DE LA HISTORIA, is part of the soundtrack for the Colombian film MI ABUELO, MI PAPÁ, Y YO directed by Dago Garcia.
NAWAL has had the privilege to share the same stage with artists such as MANU CHAO. The band was chosen to support the first concert MANU CHAO performed in Colombia of his last Latin American tour.
