New to classical music? New Century Chamber Orchestra is a great place to start. Led by world-renowned violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, the conductorless ensemble functions more like a band or string quartet. The musicians rely only on each other to hold the music together, and create energetic performances of the classics and new music.
The New Century Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1992, looks for fresh, exciting new ways to present classical music in the San Francisco Bay Area by combining performances of extraordinary quality with innovative programming. The music director chooses the programs and guides the artistic vision, but the seventeen members of the orchestra perform without a conductor. Musical decisions are made collaboratively, resulting in an enhanced level of commitment on the part of the musicians to concerts of remarkable precision, passion and power.
As part of its dedication to the future of music and to the community, the NCCO provides violin lessons to underserved students in Marin City and San Rafael’s Canal District, as well as intimate classroom performances by string quartets to students in Bay Area elementary schools.
The orchestra has released four compact discs, one of which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997.

Hi there! The Danish composer Per Nørgård's music has been much on my mind the past few years. Arguably the most important now living Scandinavian composer also has a remarkable output for the guitar. I spent a couple of years working with the composer on this repertoire, spanning from 1973 to 2000, in order to embrace the emerging performance practice associated with his work.
I have just uploaded 10 new tracks, all taken from "Tales From the North", my double CD box with the complete guitar works of Danish composer Per Nørgård. Also, in my latest blog you will find recent reviews of this release.
For further reading about the composer, this is an excellent website, with articles by a series of scholars and performers that have dedicated much study to his work:

Your ensemble string playing is gorgeous. I would love to hear you play something of mine. Listen to the new recordings of string orchestra music on my page - and if you like, I would love to hear from you. Best regards, Stan
New Century Chamber Orchestra- I heard the recording of Piazolla's "Four Season's of Buenos Aries" on Performance Today. It is truly one of the most moving and wonderful performances I have experienced. Congratulations to you and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg! All the best. Andy Fein Fein Violins FineViolins.com
Thank you for a fabulous concert last Saturday-- the evening was a highlight during our difficult trip to San Francisco to perform for our mutual friend, Jorge Liderman's memorial concert. We have fond memories of attending your "Rolling Strings" dress rehearsal with Jorge at the Presbyterian church in Berkeley and look forward to your upcoming CD with his work. Keep Creating. All the best. Beth and Matt, Duo46.
