Nina Carmela has always been an ambitious individual. From a young age, she has always had a love for music and started to pursue her interest with piano tuition which she started when she was 11. It wasn’t long before she persuaded her tutor to give her vocal training to increase her abilities and from the age of 14, Nina continued this tuition over a 9 year period and worked on genres across pop, soul, classical and jazz standards.
Hailing from Hertfordshire musical opportunities in and around her area was extremely limited, so she made the most of the resources and studied the industry as well as developing her craft. The more Nina studied about the music industry, the more negative opinions she had come across towards the UK market, which concluded Nina into slowing down her musical pace.
Nina became disheartened in her ambition to develop herself as an artist but once she found her passion for Hip Hop grow, her ambitions became more to her than just music. This is where her journey into journalism and artist management began. Creative writing always played a big part in Nina’s life from as young 6 years old, from short stories, poetry and journals. When she was 14 she entered a competition at the International Society Of Poetry with a poem entitled ‘Green Life’, although Nina only reached the semi-finals the poem was published in an anthology and she also received a certificate for ‘editors choice’. It wasn’t until this period that Nina began to take her writing ability’s into professional practise.
Interests in music journalism occurred after seeing an advert in Touch Magazine advertising a vacancy as a trainee music journalist at BBC 1xtra… So in 2004, Nina started to pursue a career in freelance journalism and enrolled on a feature writing course at The London School of Journalism. Nina began to practice her specialist writing by attending concerts and putting together general music articles. Although she had 2 years to complete this course, Nina received an honours diploma in just under a year and was already contributing to various music webzines. The experiences she gained throughout her studies were to help up and coming artists within the UK through her journalism, and with this she had plans to take this interest further.
Promotional tactics started with the intentions of exposing up and coming artists through journalism, Nina started writing for a popular webzine called ‘Every Urban Thing’ and over time, she was appointed chief editor of the ‘unsigned’ section after she increased the number of site visitors. While contributing for ‘Every Urban Thing’, Nina was also contributing to ‘The Situation’ which is also an online publication where she was carrying out music reviews and interviews with established artists.
Nina approached her ideas regarding ‘unsigned’ artists to the music television station ‘Channel U’. With ‘Channel U’ being a music station that was dedicated to up and coming artists it was a positive avenue at the time to take. Nina was writing up artist profiles and music news for the Channel U website, and later began writing music reviews for ‘Undercover Magazine’ just before it closed down, and also contributed abilities to ‘Tha-One.Com’ with artist features.
As the work load became continuous, Nina dropped all publications besides EUT as she wanted to focus on building up her own PR Company, then known as ‘Rhymes N Beatz UK’. She began to build up her contacts through journalism and started off helping artists plug their music to pirate stations and then later built up a contact list of publications to approach. It wasn’t long before Nina’s work efforts became apparent and she soon gave up her writing to continue her PR work. To date, credits include mainstream/independent worldwide press and radio distribution, international event bookings, artist participation in marketing campaigns, event management, artist recognition and exposure across national TV.
By January 2007, Nina Carmela changed the company’s name to ‘Rhythmic Visions PR’ and held her first event in February that year where more than 12 artists on the RV roster performed. Although advertisement was limited due to lack of funds, promotion was carried out through mailing lists, forums, and social websites and capacity of the venue was filled. In 2007 Rhythmic Visions went into partnership with Underground Promotion UK offering music services internationally such as PR, radio plugging, graphic design, video production and photography, concluding a joint venture as RVUP International Music Services. As Nina’s passions lay business management, her position at RV consisted of brand and project marketing.
After a venture of exploring all aspects in music business, Nina got back into her music journalism and was writing for UKMUSIC.Com, HHNLIVE.Com, DaStreetBuzz.Com, and continues to write for YORAPS.Com UKHH.Com. She’s is also part of the Draft Pick Show where she interviews US and UK music professionals for a monthly podcast.
To date Nina Carmela let go of her role at RVUP to focus on expanding her own empire at Rhythmic Visions Mgmt & PR. Continuing to pursue the brand marketing, PR and business management, Nina currently manages UK artists Genesis Elijah, Karl Hinds, Loose Skrewz and is co-manager at Ill Flava Records; she also represents Da Infamous Caspa C (DJ), DJ Locky Stylez, Locksmyth and Baby Sham. Further ventures include PR for FlavourRadio.Com with DJ Locky Stylez, event management/PR with club brands and launching new clothing brands.
Throughout her journey Nina has been inspired in most aspects of the music industry by her peers, clients and the beautiful people surrounding her, she has a keen interest in expanding her horizons outside of music which she is looking to pursue in 2009 including writing her first book. Whilst inspirations are high, Nina Carmela will continue to follow her dreams and make them reality,
