~THE LAST SHOW~ is dedicated to CASEY BOKHOVEN~

    ~November 22, 1980- March 11, 2007~

I thought a lot about Casey's family, especially his mom, dad and brother and his family, on his birthday- November 22, 2009. He would have been 29. And had also thought about his family on the day Tolly Carr was released from prison on Monday, May 18, 2009 after serving two years for Casey's death. ..Tolly Carr to face uncertain future

    ....

I especially thought of Casey's friends and family on the THREE YEAR anniversary date of Casey's death on March 11, 2010. I went to the site of the crash on West 1st Street in Winston-Salem for a moment of reflection. I always leave a little something there for those who pass by to see. Casey Bokhoven will never be forgotten.

What was your life like when you were Casey's age when he was killed so suddenly and unexpectedly? Or maybe you haven't reached age 26 yet. I hope you do. There's a lot of life yet to live.

I often think about Casey's family and friends. The grief is still there. The loss is still current even years later. Casey would have been completing his studies in culinary art at one of the best schools in New York City. He wanted to be a fine chef. Maybe love and marriage and kids were just around the corner for Casey.

We will never know. No one ever will. Casey is certainly in a better place than all of this. But, it would have been better to have him here with us. Sadly, March 11, 2007 was The Last Show.

DRUNK DRIVING sneaks up and STEALS away your life.

DRUNK DRIVING digs a hole of sadness and anger in the heart when you lose the one you LOVE.

DRUNK DRIVING is not just a cause. ..

It is PEOPLE- Moms and dads, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins, boyfriends, girlfriends and best friends, buddies and co-workers who will never come home again.

It is PEOPLE- the people who are left behind to miss their loved one for the rest of their lives.

When it comes time to CHOOSE- Have a DESIGNATED DRIVER, CALL a FRIEND, CALL a CAB or be a true friend and TAKE the KEYS. There's too much to lose by DRINKING and DRIVING.

TONIGHT doesn’t have to be- THE LAST SHOW…

Casey's friend Crissy gave me permission to use her photo. Casey loved tattoos. Crissy's hand tats say it all. Despite the tragedy of drunk driving, ultimately LOVE WINS.

Note from Karen, keeper of this MySpace page

This MySpace page was started shortly after a tragic event occurred in the city where I live- Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A local television news anchor named Tolly Carr got into his pickup truck in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 11, 2007 after a night of drinking with friends and coworkers at the local bars. He drove down a street closed to construction and ultimately veered off the street and hit and killed Casey Bokhoven, who was standing on the sidewalk across from his home.

I was so moved by what happened to Casey that I began to put the news videos on YouTube and started this page shortly thereafter. After a spring and summer of considerable media coverage, Tolly Carr, in addition to a drunk driving charge, pled guilty to felony serious injury to his passenger and friend Fjola Wilson. He pled guilty to felony death by motor vehicle and served a sentence of 25 to 39 months for Casey's death. Carr was located first in a medium security prison near Raleigh and then in a minimum security facility in McCleansville, NC near Greensboro. He was allowed to spend short amounts of time outside the prison walls starting November 2008; this level of freedom was based on good behavior.

The Bokhoven family brought a civil suit against Tolly Carr and three of the bars that overserved him that fateful day and night before the accident. Tolly Carr and two of the bars settled for an undisclosed amount. The third bar was forced to close as a result of the suit. The lawsuit was filed by the Bokhoven family in hopes of making a statement beyond the minimal time served by Tolly Carr for Casey's death, and to serve as a beginning point for their petition to the North Carolina legislature to hold establishments liable for the amount of alcohol served their customers.

Tolly Carr was released from prison on Monday, May 18, 2009 after serving approximately two years for Casey's death and the other offenses. This was the low end of his sentence duration, based on his good behavior while serving his time. Tolly Carr is residing in the Greensboro area. He is serving 100 hours of community service as part of his sentence, some of it speaking to convicted drunk drivers. Whether he will fulfill or has fulfilled this totally by advocating against drunk driving is hard to tell; the Bokhoven family has stated their desire that the face of this drunk driving case be Casey's not Tolly Carr's.

It has been reported that Tolly Carr is filling in as a guest host on the morning show of the Fox TV affiliate in Charlotte, NC as of January 2010. Personally, I wondered if this was a little early in the emotional timetable for Casey Bokhoven's family and the public in general, although Charlotte is a different market than Winston-Salem. But, it's not that far away. I've also heard reports that he is working behind-the-scenes with a local media production company.

I didn't know Casey or his family before this happened, but I couldn't imagine going through something so tragic. When a loved one is killed by a drunk driver, the loss is devastating and far-reaching. I am grateful to have met some very incredible people through this page who have experienced this loss and it has given my own life a perspective I never would have imagined.

Life seems more precious and a lot more fragile and filled with the possibility of the unexpected. I have seen vulnerability and bravery standing side by side in the midst of incredible grief. I have witnessed the strength of friendship in supporting one another one day at a time as I watched Casey's friends "love each other hard."

I appreciate Casey's family being supportive of me telling his story and ultimately theirs as well. They lived an extremely difficult time of sorrow in the public eye, and while the high profile nature of the case brought desired media exposure, it also came with a loss of privacy. The family needs that now and therefore this MySpace will no longer focus on Casey exclusively as it once did.

Casey was a creative and artistic soul who expressed himself in his work as a chef. Casey loved music. He taught himself how to play drums and guitar. Casey loved supporting local musicians by attending performances as often as he could. He loved being with his family and friends. Casey Bokhoven and his life will always be the heart and soul and influence behind The Last Show.

Chadwick was hit head-on by a drunk driver in the summer of 2006. In this case, the drunk died and Chadwick almost didn't make it. His legs were crushed and it took months of rehab to recover. With his blood type written on his casts, "B positive" encouraged Chadwick in difficult moments. He is so grateful to the medics, fireman, police, doctors, nurses, his family and many others who helped him, he has gone back to thank them all and posted their photos on his MySpace page. Elena Bright Shapiro, beautiful ballerina

Elena Bright Shapiro of Winston-Salem was killed by a drunk driving Dr. Raymond Cook, in Raleigh, NC on September 11, 2009. Elena, age 20, was a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and was training in ballet with the Carolina Ballet. Ironically, Cook is also from Winston-Salem. Elena was a bright rising star with a promising career ahead of her. She was also a daughter, sister and friend whose life was wrongfully stolen by another person making a decision to drink and drive. Click on the photo above to read Elena's story in the Huffington Post and to watch her friends at the ballet talk to The Today Show.

Welcome to THE LAST SHOW. No matter your religion, political persuasion or moral convictions: Drunk driving, drugged driving and now distracted driving affects us all.

My name is Karen. I'm the person behind The Last Show on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. I live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where a young guy named Casey Bokhoven lived. He was only 26-years-old when he was struck and killed while standing across from his home. The "accident" was caused by a well-known TV news anchor who was driving drunk on Sunday, March 11, 2007 after a night of heavy drinking. I will never forget the shock of that day.

I didn't know Casey or his family before this happened. I only knew the news anchor from TV. I was so affected witnessing the grief and pain of Casey's family and friends via the first news reports, I had to do something. So, here is the something. Casey's story is in the left column of this page. Others who have lost their lives in a drunk driving incident are featured in the right column.

I respect your privacy. It would be wonderful if you decide to be a friend, but my first hope is that you will take a moment to meet some of the people on this page. Drunk driving takes real people like you and me.

REAL PEOPLE who didn't know that TONIGHT would be THE LAST SHOW

NOTE: The information on this profile is that of Casey Bokhoven- MALE, his birthdate, etc so people can find this page who want to remember Casey. As it says above, I am Karen FEMALE, the person behind The Last Show. ..

Families of lost teens challenge law enforcement to action

Four North Carolina teens died in tragic wreck on Memorial Day Weekend 2007- not far from Winston-Salem- in Davidson County. Authories say high speed was the determining factor. Alcohol was found at the scene.

I really feel for these families.

Chad Calvert's mom cries for him, her son, her "baby." The love this mom has for her son touches me.

Friends remember Jacob Mayo, Chad Calvert, Robert King and Zachary Main at the crash site. The heartbreak is difficult to take in.

Kelli Laine Lewis is a South Carolinian who lost her life in a drunk driving accident at age 18. After being served alcohol at a drink house run by adults, she got into a vehicle with two guys instead of going home with a designated driver. Tommy, who was driving, lost control when he started racing a kid in another car. They crashed into a tree and Kelli and Tommy and Jason died. The kid in the other car lived- never charged and a Breathalyzer test was not done. Her MySpace page is kept by Kelli's mom- Pam tells it like it is! Excellent site!

Jessica grew up "down east" on the coast of North Carolina. Recently taken by a drunk driver, her little boy is missing his mom.

Speaking of little boys missing mom, how about a mom missing her little boy? Kevin is "FOREVER FIVE." His mom Heike is very involved in the fight to prevent YOUR child from being hurt or killed by a drunk driver. "Forever 5"- Precious Kevin makes me hug my own kids and appreciate them every day.

Kevin

Perhaps THE saddest drunk driving deaths- Katelyn and her boyfriend James were riding in his car when the impact came: a drunk driver slammed into the passenger side where 8-month-pregnant Katelyn was sitting. The paramedics did an emergency c-section to save baby James, but he didn't make it. His daddy cried as he held his baby son in his arms and said goodby to his little family.

Petie Shultz was a chef and enjoying life in his 20s when he was killed by a drunk driver.

Your all-American beauty, Ashley Ann "Peachez" Perry had just turned 18 and was finishing her last year in high school in Virginia. A drunk driver hit her car and two young men pulled Peachez out as it burst into flames. Sadly, she died from her injuries.

..

Jeremy Cole died at the age of 26, a drunk driver stealing him from those who loved him. Jeremy's little boy didn't understand it all. He justs wants his Daddy back.

A pedestrian, Jessie was hit and killed by a drunk driver as he was walking on October 8, 2006. He leaves behind his girlfriend Kelly and his son Devon, who had just turned 2-years-old.

Best friends, Heidi and Sadie are "forever sweet 16" because their car was hit by a drunk driver. "When found at the scene SADIE had her head laying on HEIDI'S chest and HEIDI had her arms around SADIE. "The ANGELS came and entwined them and carried them up as one."

Kristian Nicole Wesnesky was your everyday girl. Hanging out with friends on a hot summer day was ideal! Chillin' out at nite in jeans and a sweat shirt was her thing. Until, a "friend" bought some beer and started drinking while he was driving. Instead of taking her home, he wrecked his SUV and Kristian lost her life in 2004.

Donna Rehm was living life as a sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She was killed on December 24, 2006. What a horrible thing to receive during the holidays- news of your loved one's death at the hands of a drunk driver.

Tamara has lost two of her three children. Little Heather, age two, died when the pickup truck she was riding in was struck by a drunk driver. She and her carseat were pinned under the vehicle. Cody was fifteen when an act of teen violence took his life. How could a mother live through such sorrow- not once but twice?

Kayla Lynn Miller was killed in a tragic car accident in January 2007. She was only 16. The driver who caused the wreck was recently charged with driving while under the influence- this time, the influence of marijuana.

Christina Lemon went out with friends and everyone was drinking, including the driver who later lost control of the car they were in. Christina was ejected from the vehicle and died. She was only 14. Her family including her parents are missing their daughter who brought sunshine to their lives.

Hayden Vann had lived a brief 19 years when she was killed in 2003 by a drunk driver near Marietta, Georgia. Her sister, still haunted and devastated says "I wish everyday that Hayden had not gotten in that car with a drunk driver. Being young does not make us invincible."

..

If you have a banner for someone killed or injured by a drunk driver, please send it to me and I will post it here.

Makayla Jade Marie Laurion

She DIED before she was BORN- killed by a DRUNK DRIVER

Makayla's mom was counting the days until her unborn baby was to arrive. Sadly, Makayla's mom was hit by a drunk driver on May 7, 2005. She was eight months pregnant and when the doctors were checking her out, they discovered that baby Makayla no longer had a heartbeat. Labor was induced and two days later on May 9, 2005, Makayla's mom held her baby girl, still and lifeless. An autopsy showed the baby died as the result of blunt force head trauma when the drunk driver hit the car her mom was driving. The drunk driver was not charged with Makayla's death because the accident occurred in a state where an unborn child is not protected under the law when she is killed by a drunk driver. The driver got a "slap on the wrist" and has gone on to rack up two more DUI arrests, all before his 21st birthday.

Thank you to Pooka, Makayla's aunt for bringing this heart wrenching loss to my attention. Sympathy to Makayla's mom and all of her family who miss this little girl. Innocently sleeping in protection under her mother's heart- and yet, still not safe from a drunk driver.

Tolly Carr Sentencing Hearing Videos- August 13, 2007

Tolly Carr's Statement- August 13, 2007

"I fully support the decision rendered (Monday) by Judge Smith and I look forward to serving my debt to society. I hope to emerge from prison a better man whose number one priority is to contribute to our society. I am terribly sorry for the tragedy that I have forced the Bokhovens to endure, and I hope that everyone will consider their privacy so they may continue to grieve. I've disappointed a lot of people through my irresponsible actions, including family members and friends, who have supported me throughout my life. Please, forgive me. Thank you dearly for all who have sent words of encouragement since the accident. To everyone hearing these words, if you will elect to drink, please don't drive. You have everything to lose, and nothing to gain."
