NECI Library's Blurbs |
About me:
At the New England Culinary Institute the Chefs and Faculty believed that learning does not end in the kitchen. Since the first year of operation NECI has been building a collection of books to support the student's learning and the faculties' teaching.
NECI's first Librarian, Jenny Hermenze was originally hired in 1988 to teach English. However, her past experience and training as a librarian led to extra duties. In 1988, the NECI collection consisted of about 200 items being housed at Vermont College's, Gary Library. Realizing that more could be done Jenny was allotted a budget to purchase books for the collection. In 1989, the Essex campus opened and a starting collection of 500 books was purchased. Over the next several years Jenny focused on collecting the key authoritative books in the culinary field for the libraries.
The collection in Montpelier would move from the Gary Library to a new location at the Green Mountain Building in 1996. The Essex collection was first housed at Trinity College in Burlington and then St. Michaels College, Durick Library. In 2006, NECI made a decision to move both library collections closer to the students and faculty.
The Montpelier Library was moved to a central location at 7 School St.
The Essex collection was moved to its new location at 1 Franklin St.
The NECI Libraries have a total collection of 5,000 items, consisting of books and audio visual materials. A significant portion of the NECI Library collections are duplicate copies of the key authoritative books. The other portion of the collection is specifically collected to support the curriculum of faculty and student interests. The new locations have allowed for items to be easily delivered between campuses to students, faculty and staff.
The NECI Libraries strengthen and enhance the teaching, research and service of the New England Culinary Institute. The Libraries promote intellectual growth and creativity, by developing collections, facilitating access to information resources, teaching information literacy skills and offering research assistance.
