Ned Branchi is a singer and songwriter based in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. Ned’s career began in the late eighties with ‘The Horla', supporting tours with Hunters and Collectors, Midnight Oil and other great bands. In the early 90’s Ned was a founding member and singer songwriter of ‘Bigger than Jesus’ who went on to release his material on ‘Killervision’ and ‘BTJ’. In the late 90’s Ned founded ‘Spoon’, an Alternative grunge rock band forged in the sweaty pubs of Newcastle, taking Newcastle by storm and soon becoming the top band in town, with the largest audiences, every weekend. Residencies at the largest venues in town and extensive regional touring saw the band develop a massive fan base of loyal punters. Having won critical praise for their live performances, ‘Spoon’ released a self titled EP in 97’. The CD launch was held at SJ’s in Newcastle and was sponsored by Channel Ten and NEWFM. The EP was produced by Aria award winning engineer ‘Wayne Connolly’ and features 7 original songs. The songs are delivered in a classic ‘rock’ format but are a heady mix of pure ‘pop’, ‘gutterfunk’ and ‘folksy melodies’. Songs from the “SPOON” EP feature in 2 Surfing Movies, “Pulse2” by Justin Ganes and “Injuiced” by Brook Sylvester. Due to a conflict of interest with “spoon” from Texas, the “SPOON” project is now available as ‘NED BRANCHI’ – “THE SPOON PROJECT”.
Returning home to Melbourne in 2000, Ned began a stint in Ethnomusicology at Monash University and performed in the Indonesian Gamelan Orchestra under the direction of renowned Gamelan Master and Jazz musician, Koswara Sumamidjaja. Training in the instruments “Saron” and “Kempul”, culminated in the performance of the “Sankuriang”, a dynamic play that tells the creation story of the ‘Bandung’ people in West Java.
Recently Ned has launched a solo career and begun recording “The Zen Butterfly Project” with renowned engineers and producers, James “oysters” Kilpatrick and Tim Millikan. This is Album features some of the best material from the live performance and a great new line up of musicians. The album is yet to be released officially and is due for release early in 09.
Ned Branchi is currently performing regularly in Australia and recently performed a number of shows in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Whilst in Indonesia he also wrote, recorded and produced the song "Garbage Man" as a collaboration with Artist in Residence, Cassandra schultz and other artists under the auspices of Asialink, Cemeti Art House and Arts Queensland. Meanwhile, the demo tracking of another album is underway and is due for release late in 09, with a National Tour planned on the back of the album release.
