My full name is Oprah Gail Winfrey and i was born on January 29, 1954 on a farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi. I was supposed to be Orpah, from the Bible, but for some unknown reason I was known as Oprah almost from birth. My dad Vernon Winfrey who was in the army and my mom Vernita Lee who was a housemaid separated soon after I was born, leaving me to be raised by my maternal grandmother. My deeply religious grandmother educated me until I was six, then I had moved to Milwaukee to live with my mother.During this time, I was sexually abused by a teenage cousin and then by other male relatives and friends. I was thirteen when I ran away from home because I was having a difficult time living with my mother. Then my mother sent me to live with my father in Nashville. He was very strict and provided me with guidance, structure, rules, and books. He required me to complete weekly book reports, and she went without dinner until she learned five new vocabulary words each day. From there I started winning alot of awards!
I first joined my school drama class where I won a $1,000 college scholarship after delivering a short speech. I was the first black woman to win Nashville's Miss Fire Prevention title. In 1971 I was named Miss Black Tennessee. In 1976 I graduated with a degree in speech communications and theater from Tennessee State University.
In 1986 I received a special award from the Chicago Academy for the Arts for unique contributions to the city's artistic community and was named Woman of Achievement by the National Organization of Women. My show called, The Oprah Winfrey show won several Emmys for Best Talk Show, and I was honored as Best Talk Show Host. Since my show has started it has become one of the most watched T.V. shows watched. Some of my accomplishments are starting my own book club, which millions of people have joined, Apart from being a successful Talk show host I am also a producer, successful actress, Founder of the successful "O, the Oprah Magazine", co founder of "Oxygen Media", and a generous Philanthropist (someone who devotes his or her time, money, or effort towards helping others)
Some of my contributions are building the angel tree network; this helps people from all walks of life to help themselves better their lives, I started building houses in Mississippi called angel tree lane this is to help the people of hurricane Katrina, I Founded Families for Better Lives Foundation to help abused children.
