This letter needs to be signed by citizens and legal residents of the US. This will show Congress that voters (citizens) and future voters (legal residents) are voicing their opinion supporting a fair and humanitarian Immigration reform. Government experts say if we don’t accomplish a resolution to this issue TODAY, we may have to wait until 2010 or 2011 to try again.
Though the immigration system in our nation is extremely imperfect and in need of reform, extremist and reactionary proposals that would FURTHER exploit hard working and vulnerable families among us does not constitute a responsible solution. Many of us believe that it is possible to strengthen our nation's security without sacrificing the American dream of many and the American values we hold dear, such as civil rights, labor standards and human dignity.
We need to take action NOW and convince our senators to replace the current patchwork of immigration laws and procedures with a fair, equitable, and comprehensive immigration reform that at a minimum includes:
A commitment to basic human rights and civil liberties for all individuals;
Humanitarian measures and enforcement to prevent human trafficking and abuse;
Access to public education for children living in this country irrespective of their immigration status;
Attention to family reunification and reduction of the family immigration backlog;
Pathways for legal work and earned citizenship;
The elimination of anti-immigrant discrimination and racism in employment practices; and
Immunity from deportation for substantiated reports of severe employment abuses against immigrants.
TAKE ACTION NOW and call your Senators throught the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to the senator representing your area by giving them your ZIP code. Once conected to your senator's office tell them "I SUPPORT AN IMMIGRATION REFORM".
