   About Neil I.

New track posted (finally...)

"Lovelife" (Lush cover) (2008)
Like the Cocteau Twins, Lush are one of my all-time favourite groups. This is my instrumental cover version of a song written by Emma Anderson from Lush's 1994 album, Split. I've slowed down the pace quite a bit and really tried to bring the track into my own soundscapes. Hope you enjoy it, even if you haven't heard the original version.

"Rose Island" (2007)
The inspiration for this piece came to me in January of 2007. It took about a month to complete. It starts off slow...but trust me, it goes somewhere. You will be rewarded for your patience. For those who have heard my interpretation of "Ribbed And Veined" (below), this is a lot more mellow. For those who have heard my other pieces, there's nothing earth-shattering or groundbreaking here; it's just a nice, mostly tranquil piece -- that just might take you somewhere else. I think it came out very well. Feel free to send me a message if you find it at all enjoyable.

As with all my pieces, it's better to listen when you're not distracted and preferably with headphones.

"Ribbed And Veined" (Cocteau Twins cover) (2002)
In the early 1990s, after developing a teenage crush on a girl who was a big Cocteau Twins fan, I picked up heavily on their music and Robin Guthrie's phenomenal production work. The crush, however, did not work out. Out of that crush came the inspiration to start composing music. Around that time, I had paid special attention to the Cocteau Twins' instrumental works -- which were few but always favourites of mine. When it came time to submit covers for a tribute album, "Ribbed And Veined" (off of the Cocteau Twins' 1985 "Tiny Dynamine" EP) was easily the choice for me. The original is an incredible and beautiful track - somewhat chilled out and ambient with a hint of evil. I elected to do what I thought was a somewhat "trance" track, but as it does not follow the typical structure of a trance track, it has been labelled "drum and bass" - which I am fine with. I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of "drum and bass" but I do like Massive Attack, some Tricky, Freaky Chakra, and some Faithless. Whatever style it is, I am honored to have had my track included on the 2002 "Half-Gifts" compilation on Dewdrops Records. My cover of this Cocteau Twins track is also featured here on MySpace. I hope the Cocteau Twins and you enjoy it.

My background
I am a long-time fan of many different mainly electronic types of music: namely IDM, techno, '90s electronica and especially trance. But I also love some more conventional types of music like new age and contemporary jazz - artists like Pat Metheny (with or without his Group), Acoustic Alchemy, and many artists on the Windham Hill label (I'm a big fan of their samplers). I have been listening to all these kinds of music since my college days of the early '90s. But my love for electronic music can be traced back further to the '80s with Kraftwerk and DEVO. Since becoming an electronic music minor, I've dabbled with composing most of these kinds of music, but have found my primary compositions to be all instrumental music ranging from sometimes moody "new age" material to upbeat and light instrumentals that aren't too serious at all. Many have called it "Weather Channel" music, "theme" or "soundtrack" music...which is funny, since, in college, I wrote theme music for about a dozen student-produced TV shows. But the album's worth of instrumental compositions I've made since 1991 are simply soundtracks to movies that don't exist. I call it "headphone" music, as most of it has many different layers, and is good to listen to with headphones either right before bedtime or as you're drifting off to sleep...which is also when much of it was composed.
