Mike Flanagan and Missy Gibson, who met through their mutual association with the notorious Detroiter Frank Pahl, of Only A Mother fame, have been working together for five years, writing songs for their bands Breech (full band) and Nellie Bly (Trio/duo) as well as for other projects.
Gibson is a Detroit native who moved to L.A. in 1996 and signed a publishing deal with EMI shortly thereafter. Her performances back in Detroit earned her the Metro Times notice as "the best unsigned singer/songwriter in the country." Gibson had released two independent cds with her main band, Breech, in 1999 and 2000. Flanagan joined Breech around that time, and in 2002 the two released both the first full-length Breech cd (APRON STRINGS, which won DIY Album of the Year in 2003) and the debut Nellie Bly cd. Songs from Apron Strings were featured in several not-so-huge television shows. 2002 also saw the release of POP MURDER LOVE LOST, a cd ep from a Gibson side project with songwriter/guitarist Michael Denvir called Fuzzy Star, which was named one of LA's top unsigned bands by Music Connection magazine.
In the fall of 2004, the duo released the more acoustic and vaguely countryish IN THIS LIGHT cd ep, currently available at shows and on-line. They also began working with innovative drummer Karen Morelock.
Prior to meeting Gibson, Flanagan performed and wrote with L.A./Oakland-based band Giant Ant Farm as well as fronting alt-rock band Willoughby, where his songs appeared in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as well in several independent films. He's currently also performing and writing with The Lisa Marr Experiment, which in 2003 released "American Jitters", their sophomore release on Sympathy for the Record Industry.
Nellie Bly has plans to begin recording a new and long overdue CD this summer (2007).
Perhaps the quieter, more hummable side of Breech, challenging yet highly listenable, Nellie Bly's songs bulge with a kind of unvarnished brilliance that in the past has garnered rave reviews in the Los Angeles Times, the Detroit Metro Times, LA Weekly as well as others. The OC Weekly describes Nellie Bly as ". . . avenging-angel music for the jilted lover or the wronged artiste. . . it's snappy songwriting craft doused with a Tom Waits weirdness." We liked what a fan recently called the band, ". . . creepy and elegant."
