FOUR STARS
UNCUT
Sparsly arranged, slyly intelligent country-folk stuffed with juniper winds, Juarez jails and long women in short dresses, delivered with all the gruff urgency of Tom Waits over lap steel and ruptured guitar.
SA singer and songwriter who earned his chops hanging out with some questionable characters in his time, Nels Andrews released his first album, Sunday Shoes, independently in 2005. The album was critically well received, earning plaudits from BBC Radio soon after its release. Eventually, Andrews was able to parlay his critical success into gigs at prominent festivals in Europe, which he managed to play while maintaining a regular job in construction in his home of Albuquerque. Andrews eventually signed a deal with Reveal Records, and with an indie all-star band -- one that included Ani DiFranco bassist Todd Sickafoose, Wilco keyboardist Michael Jorgensen, and drummer Ben Perowsky (who has worked with Joan as Police Woman, Elysian Fields, and John Zorn, to name a few) -- in tow, Andrews recorded and released his second album, Off Track Betting. It saw release in February of 2008. ~ Chris True, All Music Guide

It's great that you're playing some dates in the UK, but they're all over 200 miles away. The southwest of England is lovely especially Exeter! Please come and play here ;0)
Hey Nels, I've got a radio show for a few weeks - so, please tune into the Paul Hughes Show (filling in for Gordon Hotchkiss) on Celtic Music Radio this Wednesday between 7pm – 9pm. As well a Scottish, Irish and American folk/roots music I’ll be chatting with Paddy Callaghan about being selected for the finals of the BBC Young Trad Musician of the Year and hear him playing the harp and box. Celtic Music Radio is available in and around Glasgow on 1530 AM (MW) and you can listen anywhere else in the world on the internet at www.celticmusicradio.net and click on “Listen Live” in the top right of the screen. Thanks for reading down this far.

I bought Off Track Betting last week, a little after the fact I know (glad to see the lyrics were posted here as, good as the photos are on the insert, I did wonder). It's a wonderful album, with a wistful, dreamlike quality to it in many places. Anyway, I won't gush as experience has taught me that artists tend not to like fans gushing over and dissecting their albums in public. Oh yeah, I saw a Vincent Black Lightning in the summer, though it could have been the Black Shadow, I can never tell them apart. I was just glad to see it was being ridden. I used to ride a BMW R80RT too ... my best friend had a stripped down R100RS which looked a bit like a cafe racer, much sexier. And if you are in the UK in October, any chance you'll play in or near Bristol, St Bonaventures perhaps?
Hey Nels - you're gonna love the Cinema Bar. It's an old hang out of mine and the people there are awesome. I'm playing there this Monday - also Dan Janisch is amazing. Let me know if you ever make your way to Nashville.
Four more little sonic gems for your August pleasure are now available on the site. Blitzen Trapper, Boulder Acoustic Society, Jay Brannan and The Wiyos. Yet another fine quartet even though we say so ourselves as picked them out.
