| Member Since | 5/5/2007 | | Band Members | Born in Borinquen where he lived his first 31 years. During his middle school (and actually while rehearsing the graduation song) he discovered he could sing. He became a member of his High School and Church Choir. Also in high school, he picked up a guitar and has not put it down since. Initially he played guitar, Puerto Rican cuatro, and then bass guitar--also singing occasionally with a "Nueva Trova" group between 1979 to 1982. In 1983 he came to be part of a group called "Sabrosón" where, along with his brother and piano player Luis Vega, he sang and played bass guitar at parties and other events for a few years. In 1987 he became the bass player for a "Plena" folk group known as "Los Pleneros de la 23 Abajo". With them he played until June of 1992 learning about the rhythms derived from the African influence in Puerto Rican Music.
Nelson moved to Atlanta, GA with his family in 1992. Since then has been playing and singing solo as well as with various groups and bands. A lead singer and "sonero" for "Orquesta Lyrica" since 1994, with them he recorded the "Enrique Mercado and his Orquesta Lyrica" CD in 1998. As the lead singer of "Orquesta Tamboricua" from the late 90's until recently, he performed opening on concerts for headliners such as Oscar de Leon, Gilberto Santarosa, Victor Manuel, Joe Arroyo, Rey Ruiz, Plena Libre and Los Van Van. He also sang with "Rumba Habana" between 1996 and until 2003 and has worked occasionally with "Serenata band", "Novasound" and other musical groups in Atlanta.
Currently and since 2006 he performs solo at the Mexico City Gourmet in Decatur, GA, at the Tarahumata Mexican Grill in Alpharetta, GA with pianist Cucho García. And also performing twice a week at the Monterey Mexican Restaurant in Roswell Ga. with Saxophonist Shekinah Rodriguez and pianist Cucho García | | Record Label | unsigned | | Type of Label | Indie |
