Neneh Cherry, daughter of late celebrated jazz trumpeter & innovative world musician Don Cherry and Swedish artist Moki Cherry, sister of singer/songwriter & Carlos Santana collaborator Eagle-Eye Cherry.
First attracted attention via collaboration with the all girl punk group ‘The Slits’. Neneh went on to sing lead vocals with avant-garde jazz punk groups ‘Rip Rig & Panic’ & ‘Float Up CP’. She sang lead vocals on the classic ‘The The’ hit ‘Slow Train To Dawn’ after which Neneh began recording solo for the first time (as the first lady of legendary Ray Petri’s creative organisation “Buffalo”) with the worldwide hit singles ‘Buffalo Stance’, Manchild’ & ‘Inna City Mamma’ from her debut album ‘Raw Like Sushi’. It was during this time that Neneh made pop history by appearing seven months pregnant on the ‘Top Of The Pops’ program.
While promoting ‘Raw Like Sushi’, Cherry met legendary Bristol trip hop group ‘Massive Attack’ & collaborated with them on their groundbreaking debut album ‘Blue Lines’, eventually helping to bring them to the world’s attention via her production company ‘The Cherry Bear organisation’. Neneh’s production company also eventually release the first ‘Portishead’ album ‘Dummy’.
Neneh then wrote and recorded the worldwide smash ‘7 Seconds’ which she duets on with Senegalese artist ‘Youssou N’Dour’. “7 Seconds” reached 1 in 48 countries. “Woman”, the torch song that made Neneh Cherry a positive role model for women everywhere (recorded in both English & Spanish) followed up the success of “7 Seconds”.
After Neneh’s third album (titled “MAN”), which featured ‘7 Seconds’ and “Woman”, Neneh retreated from the spotlight to concentrate on her family. Although Neneh has eased back into the swing of things more recently by DJ’ing all over the world playing a carefully selected blend of new and old urban & eclectic music as part of the “Jugula Sessions” team. Neneh has also recently collaborated on tracks for Groove Armada and The Gorillaz. More significantly, Neneh recently joined the group “cirKus” who’s debut album “Laylow” is available now (www.cirkustent.com).
Neneh is also currently recording her fourth solo album which is tentatively planned for release during 2008.
Neneh has been tirelessly supportive of the United Nations efforts eradicate AIDS and malaria from the African continent and has pursued the west to ease their debt collection policies towards the third world in general. To this end she has recently started a second collaboration with Senegalese superstar & UN ambassador Youssou N’Dour which will bear fruit in the form of a full album dedicated to raising awareness of both the negative and positive aspects of Africa.
