The band got premises at a desolate Rainbow movie theater at the outskirts of the city, where Nervenklinik opened a rehearsal point, tattoo salon and illegal club. They played music at a huge hall. Acoustics there could be compared with the one in the metal tanks at Kanonersky Island near St. Petersburg, where the band also performed a series of concerts, therefore the style was noisy.
Combination of tuneful accordion and Jew’s harp merged into a uniform chaotic wave and a dirty drive. That was an improvisation for the friends and guests, who also played everything they could find around, forming an elusive rhythm and a spirit of a universal action. Getting crazy, everyone played pieces of iron, tambourines, drums, horns, trumpets and after that fell down on the mats till the underground opening.
The project, Nervenklinik, was founded in St. Petersburg in 1997 as a club, recording studio, film pavilion and processing workshop for black and white 16mm film. Since its founding, Nervenklinik has collaborated on several small-scale, experimental films and laid the foundation for musical collective, who represent the current independent scene and play for "their" fans, who understand, are entranced by and well-versed in the music.
From the their inception, the collective has worked to synthesize varyious musical styles that express the extraordinary compositions of acoustic, electric and noise instruments, like the cello, a steel percussions hooked up to an electric effects processor and in principle, the band don't use a guitar. The harmony of the bandoneon and the heavy rhythm section connect the depth and melodiousness of folksongs with punk culture, producing an original sound and elemental atmosphere. The musicians of this collective do not dream of scaling the heights of commercial success but concern themselves with the realization of a brave experiment that is guided by their own ideologies.
The collective plays throughout Russia and Europe and participates in international film, rock and ethno-music festivals.
In 2007, Nervenklinik worked on the sound engineering for the documentary film "Sarafan" that was shot in the far countryside in northwest Russia.
