Sara Abbott curator of the new exhibition “Weave” at NEST gallery has known London based Sy Hackney for ten years, seen his work evolve and grow through his degree and on into his establishing of the 491 community gallery in Leytonstone. After meeting Darren Calder, Brighton based weaver last year, the vision of a joint show began to form.
Hackney’s work is made by hand but the canvasses show no trace of his involvement, the myriad of lines, each painstakingly dripped down the face of the work, interwoven, sanded, built up again and combined with raised resin lines creates a vision of great gentleness and yet is also industrial, as delicate as a dragonfly’s wing but as foreign as some alien transcript. “Öincc”, a piece constructed of a spectrum of black sits at the top of the stairs, the natural light revealing the depth and complexity of an imagined map of time and space. “Once Inside We Were Happiness”, which took nine months to complete, is a massive mesh of yellows, muted reds and ochre’s. It passionate powers resonant of the love that was growing during its creation, really have to be seen to be believed.
Calder’s physical work of weft and web set in a white walled gallery, sit strong in their construction and meaning. “Jamelia” with a delicate, natural face peers from a work that has grown line by line organically; these unique and very beautiful portraits are available to commission. Others pieces such as “Debt” use this ancient human craft to proclaim a message of mans in humanity to man, whilst the large pieces such as “Funky Chunky”, with whole garments, all pre loved and with a historical meaning are an accumulation of lives and stories.
The finished pieces in both cases illustrate the artist’s involvement with their work and the invisible bonds that weave through them and into each fragment of their art, the building up of memory and experience through time and how each of them binds their artistic desires with their creative juices to produce something of importance and beauty.
Both artist produce along side smaller pieces, massive works that demand attention and respect. Pieces that you could live with forever, yet not fully understand all their hidden depths. These pieces are particularly suited for corporate hanging and both artists are happy to discuss commissions.
The smaller pieces and sets of work in Hackney’s case would be an intelligent and beautiful addition to any art lovers home. “Weave” hangs until the 29th July and the gallery is open 11am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday or by appointment at other times, please contact Sara Abbott direct for more information.
