Don’t Trash That TV
By Troy Griepentrog

Feb. 17, 2009, will be a significant day in television history. That’s the day TV stations will no longer broadcast analog signals. This will allow public safety communications to use that part of the spectrum, but your old TV may no longer work with digital signals — unless you have a converter box (go here to get a coupon to use toward purchasing a converter box). Many old televisions may be thrown out because of the conversion.

Keeping your old set until it gives out is a good green choice, but if you decide to purchase a new one, the best option is to recycle the old TV, which can be complicated. Many old TVs contain a considerable amount of lead, so recycling them is not always a simple or eco-friendly process. To find a recycling option near you, visit Earth911, My Green Electronics or the EPA eCycling index. In addition, some manufacturers have recycling programs in place, and they’ll take back old TVs they’ve manufactured (if you have a brand that doesn’t have a recycling program, you can encourage them to start one). Some retailers also have programs to take old televisions if you buy a new one from them.

Washoe County voters will be faced with ten ballot questions this election year. The following three are worth considering:

WCSD #1 - Raises the sales and use tax 1/4 cent beginning on July 1, 2009, for the purpose of equipping the Washoe County School District's older schools and making them safer and more modernized.

WC #3 - Amends the the Truckee Meadows Regional Plan and requires that local government development plans be based upon identified and sustainable water resources available within Washoe County.

RTC #5 - Authorizes the Washoe County Board of Commissioners to seek state legislation for the Regional Transportation Commission to obtain additional funding for transportation projects that reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and repair roads in the Truckee Meadows.

Just as the Do Not Call Registry freed Americans from telemarketers, a Do Not Mail Registry would give us the choice to stop junk mailers from violating our privacy, wasting our time and damaging the environment.

Subject: SHEEP MOUNTAIN PARKWAY PUBLIC MEETING

PLEASE do not forget to mark you calendars:

MAY 20TH beginning at 4pm Aliante Library
at Aliante Parkway and Deer Springs

MAY 29th beginning at 4pm Centennial Comm. Center
6601 N. Buffalo

You DO NOT have to be there very long. Just enough time to fill out a comment card, look (and maybe draw) on the maps they will have out. You only need to attend ONE meeting, although numbers showing up are impressive so I will be going to both!!!

Please look at the new maps on www. sheepmountainparkway. com
When the National Guard complained about this road going over their firing range (as it had been designed several years ago), suddenly the parkway takes some strange turns down to CC215 at Lamb or Pecos!!! Now tell me, if the 215 can handle all of this supposed traffic at those points, why can't the 215 handle it the whole way???

Spread this email to everyone you know please. We need HUGE numbers to show up!!!

Thanks Jill DeStefano

Please sign this petition to preserve an Ice Age Park in Nevada!

I am not big into petitions but this one is to preserve an ice age park in the LasVegas area. There are countless thigs that we can all learn from this land and really we don't need to build anymore in the desert anyway. It would be nice to leave some natural for future generations instead of it being swallowed up by casinos, condos and golf courses.

Thanks,
T.H.

On the online petition YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DONATE ANYTHING. Just go to

www. ipetitions. com/petition/iceagepark and after you put your name, email and any comments and click sign petition you will see a page comes up that says...."signature recorded" and a list of amounts. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex covers more than 1.5 million acres.
This is a much-larger-than-Delaware chunk of wild land in Western Montana home to grizzlies, eagles, mountain goats, and much, much more.

wildernesswatch

Big Salmon Lake

Protected as the crown jewel of America's National Wilderness Preservation System, "the Bob" serves as the prototype for all of the nation's 702 wilderness areas. Yet this priceless area is degrading. A recent Wilderness Watch analysis of 20 years of Forest Service monitoring data documented a chronic decline in wilderness values in the area. We will use our analysis to educate managers, interest groups, and members of Congress on conditions within the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Our goal with this is to prevent degradation of the wilderness character of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. The management of wilderness in the Northern Rockies often sets the tone for the rest of the nation. In fact, “the Bob” is known as “the flagship wilderness” for that reason. As such, weakening wilderness standards here reverberate through the whole of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
