Amidst a landscape of wannabe rock gods and basement bands destined for total obscurity, Never Drafted is the real deal. Clawing their way through trial and tribulation, Never Drafted has cut the fat from their act and has, as of late, emerged as a lean mean explosive machine.
United in geography as well as vision, each of the band’s four members hails from Saint-Hubert, Quebec. Basing their operations out of Montreal, it is perhaps their outsider status which has made them mavericks in the local music scene – a band which refuses to fall into any rigidly-defined niche market.
Never Drafted's sound has often been compared to such bands as At the Drive-In, Thrice, Thursday and My Chemical Romance; that is, a sound that is both aggressive yet thoughtful, challenging yet catchy. The band's focused sound belies a wide range of influences, from punk and metal to jazz, melded into an energetic and cohesive whole.
In 2008, the band released a demo of their older songs, Four Steps From History, then, scarcely stopping for breath, self-produced, recorded and released their first album, The Ritual Standoff, barely six months later.
Mastered by renowned Montreal Producer Ryan Morey (who previously worked with The Arcade Fire and Malajube, amongst others), The Ritual Standoff offered a sampling of the band’s eclectic influences, going loud and strong with tracks like “To Those Who Pray” and “New Born,” while showcasing their melodic prowess with tracks like the acoustic “Between Birds and Bridges.”
Since the release of The Ritual Standoff, Never Drafted has shared the stage with many important emerging local bands, as well as Edmonton's Passenger Action (formed by ex-members if the legendary Canadian punk band Choke), and Toronto's The Flatliners. Performing in increasingly larger venues in Montreal, these four talented musicians are accruing a devoted fan base constantly asking for more. With them in mind, they are currently working eight new songs into their live show rotation, with plans to integrate them into a second album early next year.
With a new album on the horizon, Never Drafted is constantly seeking to explore new themes in their songs. Moving away from what singer Jeff Yates refers to as "ego-centered" tracks, the band is eager to break away from some typical inspirations. In many ways, Never Drafted’s song themes are as varied as their sound. What remains constant, however, is the band’s enthusiasm and drive to succeed in this industry. “The spirit’s been there from the start…”
