A record company will help you reach more people with your music, but at the same time that makes it even harder to really connect with them. That is why you really need to be sure that you will have creative control with the company you sign with, not just jump in and sign the first contract that comes your way.
A record company is a good thing if they help you, not control you.

You always get more money to yourself if you hold an independent label. But theres also alot more work to do.
Thats where people might think a major label would be a better (but harder to get) choice..Since you only do as you are told, and don't handle that much yourself.
