Neville Brown was born and raised in Handsworth Birmingham
England. He started his musical career at 17 when he began to learn the Bass
guitar accompanying other musician in jam style sessions; this provided the
groundwork on which his production skills were to be built. Later he moved to
the six-string version and became the founder member of Cornerstone. He soon
emerged as the bands front man and main songwriter. The band played their first
gig on the eve of a new decade the Eighties. This paved the way for five years
of giging and recording which included two sessions for the BBC on the John Peel
show, appearances on Central television plus various support gigs and tours.
These included Burning Spear, Gregory Issac, Ziggy Marley, Dennis Brown and
Steel Pulse to name but a few. Unfortunately, before the band were signed they
split and went their separate ways. Following the split at risk Neville worked
with homeless young people and people at risk.
However, he became more and more frustrated working within
the constraints of ‘the system’ and has recently set up a social enterprise that
offers music programmes and personal development via drumming circles and
cultural awareness. All ‘Talking Drums’ personal donates a percentage of their
wages to TAC.
In November 2005 Neville visited Ghana where he witnessed much suffering and
distress. Many children were alone and desperate living on the streets without
regular food, water or shelter; innocent victims who suffer as a result of
deprivation Neville realized that without education and aid the children would
not be able to break free from poverty. He realized that many projects working
with children lacked the necessary infrastructure that would be needed to make
them successful.
On his return to England Neville discussed these issues with like minded people
who together wanted to make a difference, as a result the charity ‘Tribute to
African Children (TAC)’ was born.
During its first year TAC has been busy building a solid foundation from which
to launch future work.
