Bio
The New Albanian Riots is the brainchild of writer/artist/musician Frank Young and writer/musician/artist Kelly Shane. The project developed from their love of 60s instrumental music, though the band is also influenced by his interest in earlier American popular music, Mersey Beat, folk rock, jazz, exotica, cartoon scores, B-movie soundtracks and just about any oddball sounds from the mid-20th century. (Young was a contributor to the late, lamented Cool & Strange Music! magazine.)..After Young turned Shane on to the sounds of Joe Meek (the first tape is always free...), the two decided to record an album of retro instrumental music in Shane's home studio. Young played the guitars and organ, Shane played drums and manipulated sounds, and the Cream of the Stars was born...Young's accessible, yet subtly sophisticated songwriting and arrangements made the record a hit with surf, lounge and indie rock enthusiasts, but it also appealed to a surprisingly varied demographic, garnering significant college radio play in the United States, as well as fans of greatly varied ages and backgrounds. The band was particularly proud that the record was played by UK DJ John Peel. .. The Riots followed Cream with Unknown Worlds, an EP of science fiction oriented music. The response for their mini-soundtracks without films has been enthusiastic, encouraging the group to develop more thematic music. .. * "Unknown Worlds took the top of my head off-- in a good way...great sound and richly evocative from the first track-- especially for someone with my bent with outer space music, and spy, crime, and surf guitar..." .. -- Warren Beath, author of "The Death of James Dean", "Bloodletter" and "Shock Waves" .. * "Unknown Worlds is a brilliantly conceived and executed concept CD that explores science fiction soundscapes with the same command of twangy surf and skewed pop as their 1998 CD, the Cream of the Stars... the last cut, "Blue Jaunte"... is the best thing to come from the warped minds and fast fingers of the Riots yet, suggesting what it may actually feel like to teleport across a galaxy, or merely through one's own subconscious... there is plenty here that will help you prepare for the coming alien invasion...".. --Hampton S. Butterman, Cool & Strange Music .. * Unknown Worlds was on Cool & Strange Music Associate Editor Paul Tumey's "2001 Top 10 List". .. * "It's almost like The Shadows were put in a time capsule in the mid-'60s and released in the '90s to record this CD. The performance and recording quality of this CD is excellent throughout.".. --Sean Berry, Cool & Strange Music! Magazine, on the Cream of the Stars .. * "The waves don't get very big on Florida's Gulf coast except during Hurricanes. That doesn't stop this Tallahassee band from throwing up a big wave of surf guitar tunes while they wait for that big Hurricane party. Great for parties and late night study sessions.".. --Bob Pomeroy, on the Cream of the Stars .. * "...all the songs the SHADOWS and VENTURES etc NEVER wrote and/or recorded !!! Xtra fresh - super tip for spring/summer '98 !!!".. --Lord Litter, Lord Litter's Netnews, on the Cream of the Stars, listed as one of L.L.'s "Top Releases" (as of Feb. 98) .. * "Cool!".. --Irwin Chusid, WFMU radio personality, connoisseur of musical esoterica & director of Raymond Scott Archives, on the Cream of the Stars .. * "If your taste is for something a little different in the guitar instrumental line...".. --Alan Taylor, Pipeline Instrumental Review, on the Cream of the Stars .. * "...sure to please those that are collectors of instrumental music. This group seems to be showing their passion, and doing a mighty job. New Albanian Riots is quite entertaining music for throwing a party or kicking back and sipping high balls.".. --Zineith, on the Cream of the Stars .. * "I don't really know why this CD should exist, but the world is probably a better place now that it is here.".. --Tallahassee Democrat, on the Cream of the Stars .. -
