Influences
Bands we like, our desires to see the bands we like, those who sincerely apprecite and/or support what we do, those who want to make a differance, those who make an effort and anyone who makes music and shows a lifestyle and doesn't just see art as a form of mere entertainment
HERE ARE SOME FLYERS OF SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE SHOWS WE
HAVE BOOKED:
Sounds Like
Whatever heart-felt bands we feel like putting out... Folk to Hardcore, Hip-Hop to Goth and everything in between..no genre limitations!
Based out of S. Florida, New Art School is comprised, soley, of 2 ordinary guys who, respectively, have regular day jobs, a love for all genres of music, and a general appreciation/passion for all forms of artistic expression/creation. It was 2002 and I was putting together themed "tribute" shows, strictly with local bands, in which a given outfit would play a full set of of cover tunes by one, classic Punk/Hardcore band, of their choosing, from a certain region. The turn-outs were more than a novice promoter could ask for- 200-250 people consistantly coming to every show- and it seemed as if every attendee was in a band which wanted to play a show.
Dominic and I met a matter of months later, around mid 2003, by way of him being in a band which I had booked to do a Misfits tribute set. After talking only only a couple times for very short intervals we came to the conclusion that our philosophies/ethics on putting together shows were completely in sync. Music has been a passion of both of ours since we were old enough to say the word and we were motivated to put back into our scene, and music in general, a little of what it had given to us over the years. The timing couldn't have been better: the South Florida music scene definately needed a driving force wiith more capabilities than any one individual in his/her wildest dreams in order to keep local acts motivated to play and national acts interested in coming down (as due to geography and having a transient population S. Florida is largely neglected by many touring bands) as well as maintaining the interest of patrons and giving individuals a drive to start a band!
Our ethos was (and is) simple....profit is not a priority, as long as we can cover our expenses we are more than happy. Just knowing we could bring a band down that may not have otherwise come and that the show could mean so much to so amny fans, including ourselves, is payment enough! So there you have it, we decided to work together on all musical/artistic endeavors. We named ourselves after a song by The Jam entitled "New Art School". Soon we began to incorporate regular shows for local bands and even for a few lesser known national acts amongst the tribute shows. Within months we agreed to put out a record for some friends of ours in a band called DNME. We even got John Joseph, who fronted DNME in doing a Cro-Mags tribute set, to do a verse of a song on the record. At this point things started to pick up even a bit more in that word about us was getting to agents and to some rather well known national acts.
That is when we decided to become a tad more formal by way of starting a website which includes an archive for our past shows and the ability to purchase releases online (www.newartschool.net ). From there on in it has been a fairly steady ride with much gratification. With your support, word of mouth, drive to play, and our desire to help out and witness bands which we are fans of. So don't hesitate to let us know if you have or know of a band you'd like us to put out or book and please continue to help us, as well as the S. Florida music scene in general, grow-remember, It's a team effort!
