The New Glarus Brewing Company has wasted no time establishing itself as a world-class operation. The brewery was started in June 1993 by Dan and Deborah Carey, with the first brew in November 1993 - the fastest microbrewery start-up ever.
Deborah, one of life's entrepreneurial spirits, raised the capital for the start-up as a gift to her husband, establishing her as the first woman to found and operate a brewery in the US.
Dan, a Master Diploma Brewer, is well known in the microbrewery world. He has spent years setting up and consulting to microbreweries, has worked at a brewery in Bavaria and spent three years with Anheuser-Busch. Dan passed the Diploma Master Brewer's Exam at the Institute of Brewing in London in 1992 --- the first American to do so since 1978...
Dan and Deborah have successfully combined their business management and brewing professionalism with their philosophy based on individuality, cooperation and use of 100% natural ingredients to produce world class, handcrafted beers. Their list of awards seems to grow longer daily. The most recent awards bestowed on the brewery are: 2006 Brewery of the Year-Midsize (Great American Beer Festival), 2006 Brewer of the year-Dan Carey (Great American Beer Festival), and 2006 Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Craft Brewing-Dan Carey.
Current production capacity is 55,000 bbl/year. Production includes 10 to 12 beer varieties --- with a couple of surprises for good measure. Five beers are offered year round; other varieties were designed to complement annual holidays and offer seasonal variety throughout the year, plus some surprises, so keep checking back!

Our clientele here @ Shillings absolutely loves the Spotted Cow. We're thinking about getting a group together and making a bus trip up there, with plenty of Spotted on the bus of course!!!
My husband & I want to know when you are going to start selling your brews outside of Wisconsin. We live in Tucson, AZ but visited the brewery last summer while visiting family in the area.
Cast your vote for the Best Midwest Craft Brewery. Represent your favorite local beer by not only casting your vote, but leaving feedback using the comment feature. There are 30 breweries to choose from, but sure enough, somebody will comment on the fact that a great local craft brewery is missing. If there is a large number of write ins, we will tally them up.
Learning from previous polls, we have added more breweries than any other poll we have run. Voting ends April 28, 2008 3PM PDT.
