What John Waters has to say about Home Movie Day: "There's no such thing as a bad home movie. These mini-underground opuses are revealing, scary, joyous, always flawed, filled with accidental art and shout out from attics and closets all over the world to be seen again. Home Movie Day is an orgy of self-discovery, a chance for family memories to suddenly become show business. If you've got one, whip it out and show it now."

Cory Doctorow: "Home Movie Day! What a fantastic idea -- culture isn't just the stuff that the studios make, it's what we make of it. Content isn't king, conversation is -- and what better conversation-starters than the significant moments of your neighbours' lives?"

Martin Scorcese: "Saving our film heritage should not be limited only to commercially produced films. Home movies do not just capture the important private moments of our family's lives, but they are historical and cultural documents as well. Consider Abraham Zapruder's 8mm film that recorded the assassination of President Kennedy or Nickolas Muray's famously vibrant color footage of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera shot with his 16mm camera. Imagine how different our view of history would be without these precious films. Home Movie Day is a celebration of these films and the people who shot them. I urge anyone with an interest in learning more about how to care for and preserve their own personal memories to join in the festivities being offered in their community..."

And Kramer: "A HOME MOVIE isn't so much a movie as it is an archived memory. So if memories mean as much to us as they damn well ought to (have you read Sebald's "AUSTERLITZ" yet?), then archiving ought to be pretty damn important, too. So wake up and take some interest, people, before our memories are all but unreachable, buried alongside all the other tiny events that make up who we are, and WHAT we are, because it may not be too long before memories are all you have. Believe me. I know. Take your home movies to Home Movie Day."

What Home Movie Day is: We want to show your 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm! Lots of you have them, the films kick around your house or your aunt's house, the accompanying projector is broken or lost. Maybe no one even remembers what family outing or year it's from. Or that home movie of the fairy costume barbecue party you found at an estate sale. Let's watch 'em!

Questions:Reach Molly: newhavenhomemovieday at gmail.com or contact me via this page.

Might you ask: Why would anyone want to see my home movies? Or why would I want to see anyone else's home movies?

Watch a compilation of Home Movie Day clips in the video section on this page!

Home Movie Day is a worldwide celebration of amateur films and filmmaking. Home Movie Day is an annual event held in cities all over the world.

We will have projectors of all kinds set up to watch your home movies. Whether they're yours or found, bring them in. Whether you have a film or not, come in. It will be an afternoon of watching films, hanging out, and learning about amateur films.

Home Movie Day provides an opportunity for individuals and families to learn more about their home movies, how to care for films, and how home movies have helped capture 20th century history.

The people behind this are archivists, filmmakers, librarians, film enthusiasts, and the always curious. If you are interested in volunteering, please write newhavenhomemovieday at gmail.com. Assistance is always appreciated.

Who I'd like to meet:
People that want to watch films. People that want to show films. People that want to help show films so people can watch them.

Are you in New Haven or anywhere in Connecticut? Add me so the word gets around. HMD is awesome.
