Zachariah
The Minneapolis-based underground rapper Zachariah renewed this writer's interest in rap

Enter Zachariah. An original hip-hopster. An unbeatable flow. A localized glint of revitalization in a waning genre. The ultimate anti-Maynard movement.
Saturday's annual birthday bash for Zach, who's an emcee for "More Than Lights," was held at The Cabooze in Minneapolis. A group of us rustled up some cocktails and a center-stage spot to watch the action, which included a few acts from Atlanta, Madison and Inglewood, Calif. Before, during and after the show, I noticed a shabby, slinking white boy in baggy clothing walking briskly from person to person, chatting with some, laughing with others, but embracing all. There was no "ice" around his neck. No Benz waiting for him out back. No demeaning words to his companions. It was as if it was our birthdays, not his.
As "More Than Lights" busts out the tunes, all eyes are on Zach, waiting to see him lay down his sauntering, tumbleweedy lyrics. The funny thing is his spotlight frequency is minimal, if not equal to his band mates, who include an outstanding guitar prodigy, a Lauryn Hill sound-alike and a pristine DJ, to name a few.
But as he stands off to the side, partially covered by the shadows, it occurs to me that we're no longer here for Zachariah - we're looking at a modern-day Sly and the Family Stone. Zach wouldn't want it any other way.
In my musical experiences, I've never witnessed an edge so gracious, familial and harmonious, firsthand. It feels as if this atmosphere will continue its course and make permanent camp in the small clubs and venues of Minnesota. Of course, they'll sell merchandise and tour and promote, but they'll never be Lil Wayne - and they like that.
As the clock approached 2 a.m., I ran into Zach on the way out, who was making his rounds:
"Helluva show Zach, you killed it!"
"Ah, thanks a lot man."
"This is my first time seeing you guys and you all sound great."..
And with that, Zachariah clasped my hand between his two, bowed and moved to the next person.

Well where do you start when you are talking about the most awaited solo album
In Minneapolis Hip Hop. I don’t think a review is necessary it will stand on it’s own ten toes but I would like to take a little space on this page to explain why I think this album is so good.
Some people in this world find themselves in some extraordinary situations. Some people come across these things more often than others, Zach is one of them. This dude has some of the craziest stories I have heard in my life. And had some experiences most of society has never even heard of. There is a good reason for these events to have taken place These things have molded a profit, a person who is able to take you through these experiences and you can feel a little of what he felt. Whether it’s pain, remorse, laughter, I mean really when he tells of crazy fun shit you almost feel how fun that actually was. This album is like a really ill tour through an amazing persons life.
What a way to end the year, with beats by Big Jess, 84 Caprice and Ant of Atmosphere this album is the most epic since Traditional Methods.

Zachariah presents “White Jesus”
Interlock Records
Rewind to the mid 1990s. I was a music freak by every definition and extent of the word. I had graduated from highschool and was knee deep in the midwest rave scene. I was also spending nearly every night of the week at area coffe shops, clubs, and bars taking in every type of music imagineable - from heavy metal to folk to rock to hip hop to techno to house to jazz and beyond. Working a shit fast food job in the evenings and nights, I was able to stay out late without fear of oversleeping and missing my shift. During this time I witnessed the birth of Kanser and the initial slow growth of Atmosphere, among other Minneapolis area hip hop acts.
Fastforward a couplefew years to the late 1990s, and I’m working at the now defunct Bon Apetit restaurant in the famed Dinkytown neighboorhood around the UofM area in Minneapolis. A cat by the name of Zach is working at Erbert’s & Gerbet’s just up the way and on his downtime he’s booking and promoting and playing shows at a night called “Headspin” which he helped spearhead and hold down for quite a bit of time at Bon Appetit. Known as New MC (and throwing “New” tags around the same area), he helped bring the area hip hop scene to the forefront and busted ass on the daily to hold it down and keep it real. He was one of the coolest cats I ever met, especially in an area music scene, and would regularily party with my friends and I - to speak nothing of supplying the sub sandwich and house party hookup.
Fast forward ten more years. I’ve gone and moved countless times, gotten married and divorced, had a couple of kids, run through a wide range of jobs, started writing music, put out some records, got a real job, and more - and here is Zach, still busting his ass and keeping it real - just as he was every one of the handful of times our paths had crossed since my departure from the Minneapolis area roughly ten years ago. Kanser has sold out releases, played countless shows across the USA, networked and interlocked even more… And here is Zach. With a solo joint. Whoah.
But not just “Whoah”, like “Wow, dude put out a solo record” - “Whoah”, like “Wow, dude put out a solo record and it’s fucking awesome!”.
Enlisting production help from Big Jess, ANT, 84 Caprice, and more - Zach laces straight forward, downhome, soulful, funky, South Minneapolis hip hop kicks and snares with that true Zachariah New MC dialect that anyone who’s paid any sort of attention has come to know and love, and done so to the Nth. Rapping about slinging subs (the sandwiches, silly!) to doing drugs, losing friends and doing girls, playing shows and the circle of life - this is midwest laidback hip hop how it’s supposed to be done. It’s a trip to hear him rhyme about someone you know selling him some microdots, or catch a flow about a particular night or event you were a part of or heard stories about at the time.
This is underground famous, houseparty rocking, headsnapping glory - times ten.

"White Jesus" Combs (New MC) songs are a peek into the underwear drawer, uncovering heartfelt stories about parted friends and family and secrets about perverted encounters in bathrooms and sub shops. His rhymes can be dirty and borderline offensive; luckily, his debonair intonation somehow makes them sound arousing and even slightly romantic.
