Only in New Orleans could a band like the Moonshiners come into being – a group of seven dedicated, educated young musicians with one goal in mind: carrying on and building upon the tradition of New Orleans jazz. With a lineup of trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, banjo, upright bass, and drums, the Moonshiners are as comfortable crooning a second-line spiritual down the street as they are romancing a festival audience with classic Ellington arrangements. Playing songs from the likes of Louis Armstrong, WC Handy, Sidney Bechet, Django Reinhardt, as well as exciting originals, this tight-knit unit of twentysomethings plays packed festivals, dance halls, clubs, and streets, where they draw an enthusiastic following of swing dancers, music fans, and fellow musicians alike. Hailing from around the world and trained in music schools all over, the Moonshiners add a creative modern energy and their unique originals to traditional jazz, whipping up a never-before-heard gumbo of music that is flamboyantly entertaining and toe-tappingly good. The New Orleans Moonshiners play a free show every Thursday night from 10p til 2am at The Spotted Cat. Check the schedule to find out where else they are playing in town.
CD's are now available to buy at both the Louisiana Music Factory as well as at CD Baby

Hey Charlie, I have tried from time to time to learn clawhammer but I get frustrated and then it's a good thing I don't have an actual claw hammer handy. Jim Reineke, who is a new member of our little aggregation, plays some nice clawhammer style. The banjo playing you hear on The Coo Coo frinstance is my friend Jeff approximating clawhammer style on the mighty banjo-uke. Anyhow, my wife and I are coming down to NOLA last week of March, are you playing anywhere then? And thanks for the chit chat...
