About me: It all started with a weird idea, what if we play classical music in a club? Will anyone come? What will it sound like? Well, the best way to find out was to do it. The first New Parnassus Club night was at Mr Wolf's in downtown Bristol in April and the answers were obvious. This is rapidly becoming a movement. Live performances from The Emerald Ensemble went down a storm, actually DJing classical is more difficult than it looks. We abhor limits, we ridicule genres, we dispense with decorum. Laugh during performances, clap in the "wrong" places, slam the toilet doors during the quiet passages, THIS MUSIC IS NOT PRECIOUS, it's robust, it's been around longer than Rock 'n' Roll and it aint gonna die. So, what do you hear when you come to the NPC? Usually a live performance where the virtuosi on the stage can actually connect with the audience, there is no distance between performer and crowd, either physically or emotionally. Does that sound pretentious? Don't care, you have to be there to be part of it. You get music from the classical repertoire but all mixed up. You might get some Stockhausen, but then you'll get some Brahms, followed by some Elgar then some Cage, get the point? You'll hear everything. We're not going to educate you, that's your responsibility, we're going to entertain you. You want to know what piece that was that we just played? Fine, ask us, we'll most likely have to look it up. A measly £3 to get in on the door, see if you can bring your friends, help them to overcome their musical prejudices. Let everyone know and let's see if together we can't start something!
Who I'd like to meet: Interested in playing at the NPC? Splendid, send us a message and we'll be in touch.
