WNYC 93.9FM is proud to bring you the New Sounds podcast. What is New Sounds? The program, broadcast nightly on WNYC 93.9 FM, and online at www.wnyc.org, is unlike any radio show you’ve ever heard: a whirlwind tour of new and unusual music from all corners of the globe.
New Sounds combs recent recordings for one of the most informative and compelling hours on radio, and aims to make the world smaller. For over 25 years, host John Schaefer has been finding the melody in the rainforest and the rhythm in an orchestra of tin cans.
Defying rigid categorization and genre pigeonholing, New Sounds offers new ways to hear the ancient language of song. With guest musicians from David Byrne to Meredith Monk to Ravi Shankar to Philip Glass to Christopher O’Riley to Bang On A Can, Schaefer presents performances (both in-studio and from the New Sounds Live concert series) and premieres new works from the classic and operatic to folk and jazz, and anything else in between.
Each show has a theme, ranging from post-rock to klezmer to African blues to minimalism. The variety of cultures and styles explored is boundless. Music you may not have known existed and now can’t live without.
*A note to artists submitting music for consideration through MySpace - at this time, New Sounds prefers to receive CD copies of music. Please contact us through newsounds@wnyc.org for the station's mailing address.
Recorded: live on March 16, 2003 at the Beta Lounge in San Francisco
In 1967, San Francisco’s Fifty Foot Hose were certainly one of the innovators of a sound that took Psychedelia to new heights and was captured on the band’s one record, Cauldron. They are a totally unique hybrid—on one hand pulsating bay area acid rock, on the other, fractured electronic freakery, becoming one whole cohesive being. The sci-fi-ish video game-like artwork hinted at the sounds within, as did the Limelight label’s pedigree for truly progressive sounds. Band leader, Cork Marcheschi, used homemade electronic devices to create crude and experimental soundscapes and instrumental compositions that were sprinkled throughout the album.
Often starting shows with a swelling rumble that exploded into the first song, they soon developed a rabid following on the SF scene, though there was the occasional totally wrong gig, like when a very-pregnant Nancy had to perform at a Catholic Girls’ school! Still, the group wowed the crowds, performing with greats like Chuck Berry and Fairport Convention.

A super-song, a mega-composition, something that astonishes people, that makes them sob, laugh and rejoice. No “sophisticated” art but no cheap entertainment either. Take the best of pop, jazz, tango, opera, operetta, klezmer, soul, blues, minimalist music, virtuosic violin-music (Paganini, Wienawsky, Sarasate) and so on, or compose your own style. Everything is fine as long as the audience is crazy about it. Concerning the playing technique the composition is expected to be sophisticated, challenging and unconventional. It is expected to combine new effects with innovative sounds and hot rhythms.
Instrumentation: 2 violins
Duration: approximately 5 minutes of music
Awards: 1. Prize: 3000 Euros Heinrich-Vetter Preis 2. Prize: 2000 Euros Bourgier-Seisser-Cleve-Werhahn-Preis 3. Prize: 1000 Euros Pro Musica Viva Maria Strecker-Daelen Preis 4. Prize: 400€ Additionally, there will be two extra prizes of the PE-Förderkreis for students of music: each consists of 250 Euros!
