Holding Out Hope

I don't want to give up. I told my sons this on a hiking trail called Honeymoon Falls at Pine Mountain State Resort Park this summer. Parker was 9, James Tucker was 2, and they were dying to get in the pool. It was closed for chemical testing our first day. On day two, the pool was open, but it was raining. After hiking from our cabin , I decided to keep going, past the pool and lodge with its video games, to the hiking trails beyond. I imagined the dense cover of Appalachian flora would act as a giant umbrella. Honeymoon Falls didn't sound unfriendly to toddler shoes, and hope returned to my boys' sullen faces. Read more

The Good Gifts of a Fishing Hole

By GLENDA BARRETT

When my great grandmother, Sallie, grew old, she moved in with my grandmother, better known as "Mamaw" to her grandchildren, and for as long as I can remember, the two of them had a real passion for fishing. One hot summer day, they decided to try their luck at Mamaw’s favorite spot, the Minnie Shook Place, a fishing hole in Hiawassee, Georgia. Sallie, in her 80s, used a walking stick at the time, but managed with Mamaw’s help to climb over the big rocks to get under the bridge to their spot. Read more

Thanks so much for being my friend, New Southerner!

I am stopping by to say "hi" and to remind you that in addition to MySpace, you can visit with me on Twitter and Facebook. I also have a personal blog on StockValues.

I write mostly about farming/gardening and stock/bond investing, but also anything else that rattles my cage. Please stop by when you get a chance.

    Dear New Southerner,

This is not a for profit anouncement but a way to promote quitting smoking on Freedom Village Quit Smoking Forum. I will understand if you wish not to have this message posted on your MySpace site.

Coming soon……A FREEDOM VILLAGE QUIT SMOKING FORUM CONTEST!

I will soon be announcing a contest on Freedom Village Quit Smoking Forum for smokers who want to quit, smokers who have recently quit or long term ex-smokers who have been quit for a year or longer. I’m not yet sure how I want to conduct this contest or what the rules will be but I’m thinking the prize or prizes, combined, could total as much as $250.00! (This is an amount I have committed to withdraw from my Savings and I know it will be well worth it.) All I can say is, keep an eye on the Forum and make posts you think will help others to quit cigarettes…..tell your story about how you quit or what makes you want to quit, etc., ….this may or may not turn out to be the contest and you may be an instant winner(s). I haven’t determined the start date or the end date so stay tuned.

    Respectfully yours,

    James aka bubbajames

An extreme focus on profit may be good for business but it is one helluva lousy form of Government

Keep up the good work – I love your site – Paul

I made my first video slideshow and wanted to share it with you. The musician (Elizabeth Ann Middleton) is one I found through MySpace, and she generously let me use her music to set to my images. Visit her MySpace page here - http://www.myspace.com/pianorama - she's fantastic! :-)

    IT TAKES TIME

    by: Trevor Claiborn

The best things in life don’t come fast or free,

But sometimes my impatience makes me cheat.

Though I know I’m wrong, trying to rush things along,

I get mad when outcomes are incomplete.

The purpose I serve is much more than my own,

And Nature’s clock ticks much slower than mine.

I can gripe and pout or just wait the thing out,

For the Most High works on It’s own time.

I can have love, prosperity, and peace

And all the things that make it joyful to live.

Sometimes money can’t pay for those treasures—

Only my patience and willingness to give.

We are all farmers of the crops of our destiny,

Semi-conscious of the psychological seeds we sow.

So to yield the best return, we must learn

To give things time and let them grow.
