“the sea & tatami mat”
In the days beween days when all was silent & the sky was lovers with
the night stars & daylight was the newborn, there lived a wild monk.
The monk sat on his tatami mat, considering the sea which was back
then considered the map to the heavens. Drawing his breath in,
the refined eye of the monk settled on the curves that lay before him
& after many days the lines all became a sort of dance. This dance
at first was like the flame, then the movement of a leopard, lion and
bird. Once the ocean had been swallowed by night, the monk observed
the moon on the waters surface. At first there was a surface & then the moon
seemed to swim in the water, bathing herself as it were in the evening
starlit sea. At this the monk grew very happy, because of all that could be
seen, this was the most beautiful sight of his imagination.
Thus imagination, the moon, a sea for good measure & a tatami mat
are all you need for eternal bliss.
