ABOUT THE PLAYS

The America Play

A powerful and provocative theater piece ruminating on identity, roots, father/son relationships, story-telling and American history. What is it like to have your identity as an African-American constructed and defined by that which is absent. Is history fact, fiction or who was able to get the story on paper first?

Directed by TeKay (Thomas King), co-Artistic Director of NTT. Featuring Lester Hill, Jasme' Kelly, and Steven Rausch.

365 Plays/365 Days

On November 13, 2002, Suzan-lori Parks got an idea to write a play a day for a year. She began that very day, finishing one year later. The resulting play cycle, called 365 Days/365 Plays, is a daily meditation on an artistic life.

Who I'd like to meet:

Capitalizing on the artistic and creative success of 2006's all-Black production of Anton Chekov's The Cherry Orchard, several noted Triangle-area artists banded together to create a new theatre company.

Working on the theme “exactly as before,” the company fosters to recast mainstream theatre in non-traditional ways--the norm instead of the exception.

In association with the Little Green Pig Theatrical Concern, the company revealed its name at a reading of Ibsen's A Doll's House at Manbites Dog Theater in Durham. New Traditions Theatre was born.

Founding company members include nine actors familiar to the Triangle: Thaddaeus Edwards, Leigh Holmes, Barbette Hunter, Byron Jennings, TeKay (Thomas King), Chaunesti Lyon, Jackie Marriott, Geraud Staton and LaMark Wright.
