As of Aug. 2009 NYEP's new CD King Mystery has reached number 1 on jazz radio in Boston, New Orleans, Dallas and Los Angeles! Bill Milkowski called the music "burning, expressive , and lyrical" in the JazzTimes. Matt Marshall in AllAbout Jazz said " expending their trio to a septet NYEP has fashioned an invigorating woven work out of the cotton basics of jazz and swatches of futuristic fabric. Sun Ra like intonations softened by a melodic grace a la Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction" Whew! The band formed when Pat Daugherty called up Aaron Comess and Tim Givens to go into the studio and record some music. They had never rehearsed or gigged as a trio, though they had played together in various ensembles. A record came out of that first session, New York Electric Piano, and that became the band's name. The record made CMJ's top 20 in April of 2004. The band collaberated with an ancient War Oracle for their next disc, a vibrant questioning of the need for war. Midlantic Records released their 3rd CD Citizen Zen, which received glowing remarks in the January 2006 JazzTimes and was featured nationally on Listen Here Radio. Blues in Full Moon followed and the addition of Leon Gruenbaum on his invention the Samchillian. Relix magazine featured NYEP in their August 2006 issue. Adding Deanna Kirk on vocals and guest artists Till Behler on horns and Mal Stein on Soundscape for King Mystery, the band has gigged at Crash Mansion, Sullivan Hall, the Cutting Room, Rockwood Music Hall, and other fine venues. Glenn Astarita at JazzReview.com says" the best is yet to come from these forward thinking musical minds".
