discriminating ears and uninhibited feet...

YOUR INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

go here...

vladrmglasslandsweb.jpg

Weds, July 2: Viva L'American Death Ray Music, VV, K-Holes, Glasslands Gallery (289 Kent), 9pm sharp, $6: though Homosexuals were forced to postpone their tour and won't make it, wahooo! Viva l'American Death Ray Music's first NYC show in a couple of years! This legendary Memphis band has been making amazing records for nearly a decade now and, as all are so busy around the world with other projects never get together, rarely make it out on the road. New York is lucky to get two appearances this week by what is still one of the best bands in the world. But don't take my word for it. The dean of American rock critics, Robert Christgau, describes them as "TIYL Velvets, Television, Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) -- that is, roots music, Lower East Side style." Rolling Stone editor David Fricke describes them as "sexy rock chic from Memphis with a touch of Let It Bleed-era Rolling Stones and White Light White Heat Velvet Underground." Check out their latest direction here. VV is a secret surprise touring band adorned in Native American accessories. K-Holes are a new local collection of Atlanta expats featuring current and former members of Black Lips, Wet Dreams, Golden Triangle, and McNasty himself (who ain't actually from Atlanta but married into it)!

then go here....

motorcityvladrm.jpg

July 2: Viva l'American Death Ray afterparty at New York Night Train Wednesdays, Motor City Bar (127 Ludlow), 10pm - 4am, free:As always, the Conductor will be at Motor City for his weekly New York Night Train music salon. This Wednesdays guests are the four members of Memphis super-group Viva l'American Death Ray Music: NYNT regular guest, Golden Triangle's Mr. Nicholas Ray, Goner recording artist Harlan T Bobo, Polyphonic Spree drummer Jeffery Buock, and organist Brendan Spenglar (who's played with everbody from Tav Falco to Jack Oblivian to Andre Williams). All are distinguished gentlemen of the world with distinct style and taste. They spin with a dry rub slathered in a molasses-based sauce.

get some sleep already. and polish up yr dancing shoes for....

b>July 3: Discotheque Internationale: A Daft 60s Shindig (231 E 14th), 11pm - 4am, free:beautybardisco.jpg

NYNT Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin hits the Beauty Bar back room every Thursday and turns dance platters rotating around the middle of popular music's greatest and most diverse decade, channeling the variety inherent in 60s discotheque and radio playlists plus many of the tunes that were either too underground or geographically removed at the time to find their way to the same spot - laying down soul, garage, freakbeat, boogaloo, AM radio pop, British Invasion, electric blues, girl groups, bubblegum, frat rock, late r&b, early funk, early psychedelics, discotheque schmaltz, boogaloos, tropicalia, yé-yé, latin delights, and anything else that moves. Last few weeks! Get ready for the boogaloo shampoo!

then rest up, don't bother showering, check out the fireworks, and go here...

july4thcakeshopweb.jpg

Viva L'American Death Ray Music, Jessica Ann, Puddin' Tang, Lover, Hollywood, Cake Shop (152 Ludlow), 10pm, $6: 4th of July with a loud bang. Check out this amazing bill! One of Viva l'American Death Ray Music's first NYC shows in a couple of years! Jessica Ann is a new singer-songwriter rapidly distinguishing herself in our community with no lack of flair. Puddin' Tang, who should need no introduction, is one of NYC's favorite party bands - chock full o'swampy goodness. Memphis, TN's Lover! is the Jeff Crook of Reatards/Lost Sounds new project. And openers Hollywood, punk-ass Baltimorons straight out of the garage, will tear it up after the fireworks.

then, slither a few blocks west for this...

july4shakinweb.jpg

Friday, July 4, Shakin' All Over Under Sideways Down, Home Sweet Home (131 Chrystie, Lower East Side, Manhattan), 10:30pm, free: New York Night Train Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin has recently been invited to transform Home Sweet Home's 80s/90s dance night into a rough and ready rock'n'soul get-down. The last couple of months night owls shake and shimmy to 45rpm party favors - obscurities, novelties, and classics – with a pumpin' heartbeat from the 1950s to the present - soul, garage, girl groups, New Orleans beat, glam, punk, freakbeat, rockabilly, and lots of other supreme jams from across the board that're played and recorded with both rawness and immediacy for your dancing pleasure. And you never know who'll show up and pull a guest slot Ian Svenonius (Make-Up, Nation of Ulysses, Weird War), Kid Congo Powers (Gun Club, Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), and Josh Styles (Stalkers, Smashed Blocked) have all dropped guest DJ sets in the last few weeks. Now every Friday after 3AM, there's a happy hour everything in the house is 2-for-1. This party has been THE jam of late and what better way to spend the 4th than going nuts to the best kind of audio of explosives. Come get it while the gettin's good…

ok, rest up a bit (NOW you can finally take a shower), eat something, and come cool out on this huge patio...

july5web.jpg

Everyone had so much fun at the one-off White Shoes party at Hope Lounge that they've been asking when Vice TV's Soft Focus host Ian Svenonius and New York Night Train soul proprietor Jonathan Toubin are throwing another party. You asked for it, you got it. Saturday July 5 - the perfect date for cooling out on Williamsburg's biggest patio after a huge party day. As last time, it starts early (9pm), there'll be cheap drink specials (a $5 special and a $3 beer), the grill will be fired up, and the supreme jams will flow like Niagra Falls.

take sunday off. spend time with loved ones, walk in the park, call your family, take in a mike meyers movie. but get ready for next week as well...

Mon, July 7: New York NIght Train's Secret Santo kickoff party, Santo's Party House (100 Lafayette), 10pm, $5: New York Night Train has a present for you! Tonight is the pre-opening hoodang for our weekly get-down at Santo's Party House, the first cool disco in New York City in a couple of decades. Owned and run by New York a constellation of important figures in New York's underground music community, Santo's has quietly opened - steadily presenting all variety of prestigious dance music events featuring the finest disco, electro, and contemporary dance DJs. Now they've added maximum rock and soul to their already eclectic mix by bringing New York Night Train's Mr Jonathan Toubin on board. Mr. Toubin and Santo's are stepping it up a notch – initiating a Monday party that is bringing in a collection of the finest rock DJs and bands from around the world every week – along with projectionists, performance, and dancers. To keep it fresh, and here's why its "Secret" Santo, these shakin' mega-events will not be listed or advertised in print - instead announced the 24 hours ahead of time via word of mouth, email, and the internet (that means you - dear myspace friends). Despite the quality and quantity of acts represented, Secret Santo is making an effort to keep one of the most democratic door prices in town ($5 to $10 – in some of the upcoming cases, more than half-off the typical ticket price for many of these shows!). This is gonna be the jam. Though Secret Santo's officially opens upstairs in the big room on July 14th with live entertainment from a legendary Detroit rock'n'roll outfit and an excellent French pop band (at least we gave you a couple of clues!), the introductory bash will take place in the basement on July 7 featuring New York Night Train's three favorite east coast 45 DJs (wait 'til you hear the best records on the best mass-produced format of all time assembled by the best Djs through Santo's buttery mammoth sound system - feel it already?)! More info on Sunday - get used to it babies.

Tues, July 8: Puddin' Tang Residency w/Puddin' Tang and Stalkers, Don Pedro's (90 Manhattan Ave, Williasmburg), $3: Puddin' Tang will roll you every Tuesday in July at this loveable and inexpensive B-Burg dive - kicking off w/Mr. Jonathsan Toubin and Stalkers. and, every week more of Brooklyn's finest (see poster above).
