Nathan Porter
Mechanical Spring
This singer songwriter’s debut release has been 2 years in the making and features everyone’s favourite Aussie drummer Ash Davies. Getting significant airplay on community radio stations across the country, this album is a mix of Nick Drake’s melancholia and Bill Callahan’s folk groove. Funny and romantic, Mechanical Spring has its share of quality tunes, particularly In The Morning and 5pm Sun.
Nathan Porter Biography
August 2008.
Melbourne singer songwriter Nathan Porter has put together his debut album after releasing his 4 track EP released in 2006. Spending years haunting local Melbourne and European live music scenes as a solo musician, Porter and his band “The Downpour” have been working hard live to support the new album, namely “Mechanical Spring”, gaining significant play on community radio.
The album features lead guitarist and long time collaborator Dave Glenister, renowned percussionist Ashley Davies, alongside the exploration of other musicians playing violin, double bass, cello, banjo to name a few. The album was recorded and produced by the renowned Cameron McKenzie (Things of Stone and Wood, Epicure, Mark Seymour) at Eastern Block Studio’s in Suburban Melbourne.
The 12 tracks display a coloration between a raw solo sound and the introduction of his new acquainted band. It features a sometimes spontaneous delivery that is not shy from exploring a songs dynamic. Songs such as “Over Again” feature delicate and stripped folk expression that transcends into an explosion of sound complimented by the band. Other songs such as “Teasing Us Thin” feature a raw entry that ends up crying with Glenister’s ghostly guitar sound complimented by Davies’ no compromise execution on drums. Porter’s songwriting is heavily influenced by his love of Neil Young’s work, alongside Bill Callahan, Explosions In The Sky, Augie March, Nick Cave, Tim Rogers and the Dirty Three.
Live, Porter and Downpour depart from delivering the album, giving listeners a energy driven live experience that explores the songs creatively and musically, clearly delineating from the recorded versions.
The album “Mechanical Spring” can be purchased at all major records stores, Itunes and is released through Green Media.
