During his elementary school days, Ngoh's father taught him the two-string Chinese guitar, the lang ting tang. He remembers those times fondly. Lessons were conducted on bed side, imitating his father's musical phrasing on this deceptively simple instrument.
The sounds of Ngoh's childhood were also filled with the screeching and wailing sounds of the erhu (a two-string Chinese bowed instrument), which was his father's major instrument. To the family's quiet disgust, he kept a daily practise routine.
And at other times, there were sawdust in the kitchen floors, by the bathroom, where his father sawed, chiseled, ripped coconuts after coconuts, shellac-ed, polished and custom creates his own erhu. Ngoh never got around asking him why he build. Maybe it's for economical reason, or maybe he just likes to work with his hands. He'll never know.
During his teens, with the radio pumping Queen's "I want to break free" and the movie "La Bamba", Ngoh "liberated" himself from practising the lang ting tang by taking formal lessons on the electric guitar in a local music school. Due to lack of guitar basics, Ngoh had to complete a fundamantal classical guitar course before he could start on the electric. This became a turning point and the start of the love affair with the classical guitar.
Ngoh turned to woodworking when his father passed on in 2005 and build a Paulownia guitar as a tribute and as a way of mourning.
Why Paulownia? It's an oriental wood used on prized Chinese musical instruments, and Ngoh believes his father could have used them, instead of another easier-to-find and cheaper alternative. Coupled with his love for the classical guitar, he build the entire guitar mostly with Paulownia .
Ngoh wished he had learned further from his father on the lang ting tang. So, he's determined to look forward and seize the present, by using what he has in his hands, that he may continue to live his father's legacy, and that maybe one day, might himself, leave behind one.
He has played in masterclasses of Remi Boucher, Stefano Grondona, John Mills, John Duarte Alexander-Sergei Ramirez. Singapore Arts Festival (Fringe) '98, 2nd Australian Guitar Competition and Festival. With interest in music composition (particularly film scoring), he completed another 2-year diploma in music technology studying modern composition and sound engineering.
