Zo is a native Chicagoan and student of soul, funk, jazz, reggae and just about anything else that will make you a slave to the rhythm. Using his guitar and keyboard, he delivers the kind of dance-worthy dissertation you never thought possible while in school: one where you discover something old and new in an engaging, fun style.
Ivan believes in "simple elegance" when playing the bass, but is always ready to bring the energy to the stage at just the right moment. Instead of wearing his wildly eclectic influences on his sleeve, he wears them on his bass guitar, where if you look closely you can find CD tags from artists as diverse as The Buzzcocks, Jill Scott, My Bloody Valentine, Prince and Daft Punk, just to name a few.
The Chef specializes in organic and multi-ethnic cuisine, but he'll likely tell you that his fills and breaks are even more appetizing. He's been drumming since high school and claims Tony Allen (Fela Kuti's drummer) as his main inspiration. It's no surprise that the cultures and sounds of the globe are the foundation for both The Chef's cooking and his drumming, delivering a worldly treat from the comfort of your local dancefloor.
Together, these three musicians make up the main ingredients of Nguzo, a band so diverse that only a self-coined term could accurately describe their sound: "socaja" (soul, Caribbean, jazz). Not to mention their forays into funk, salsa and house as well. They are contemporary, but with a strong respect for tradition. They make music for times of harmony and music for times of action. They are the analog antidote in a digital world that has forgotten its soul.
