Growing up in the 60's was a magical time for any young musician just starting out, there were so many good bands to admire and envy...The Move...The Small faces...The Bee-Gees...The Hollies...The Stones...The Who...The Kinks...The Faces...Credence Clearwater revival... Bowie...The Beatles...the list was almost endless. Then along came the heavy weights...Deep Purple..Led Zeppelin...Doobie Brothers...Cream...Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac...Hendrix...Free...The Eagles...Pink Floyd...plus all of the Heart-warming ever green blues, soul and Motown tracks that were around at the time from all of the talented black American artists...where would music be today without them????.
How can a young budding musician not be influenced in one way or another
by ALL of these great artists...I know I certainly was...and as a drummer, the first time i heard Ian Paice's snare and bass drum technique on " In Rock" I just
sat there with a huge grin on my face, thinking to myself that one day, I would like to play like that....Well, I've been playing for quite a few years now, And over that period of time have developed my own unique style of writing and playing which I suppose must be the result of my own warped imagination and evolving techniques, and the subconscious influences from all the fantastic musicians mentioned above.
The great John Bonham was also a huge influence to me....what a monster, it always sounded as though he took a sudden dislike to his kit... Brilliant!!...Not only did he lay it down, he kicked the shit out of it while it was down there.
I always know when something is " Right " when it gives me that tingle and makes me smile...I love that feeling...it's almost better than sex ( but let's not get silly !!)...The way Stevie -Rays Strat begs for mercy (he once said in an interview that it always sounded like he was breaking out of jail)... The Eagles harmony's...A Ritchie Blackmore or Brian May guitar solo (any one will do)...Gillans vocals in the early day's...the soulful voice of Paul Rogers...And of course "Nice as Pie"...without a doubt the best band I've ever played in...their musicianship is outstanding...which reflects the mutual respect that we have for each other...From sitting down with an acoustic guitar and writing the songs...getting all the guy's over to the studio in Denmark...having an absolute blast during the recording sessions... and ending up with a great album with musicians of this calibre on it,
I'm actually feeling quite pleased with myself.
In Spain at the moment, lapping up the sunshine....but missed the show..... my internet connection is acting up!!! Try again next week when I´m back in UK!
