J.V. (aka DJ Niceness) has been following his passion for music and honouring his talents since he was little. At age four, though he could barely reach the keys on the piano, he was a musical child prodigy who could play anything from chopin to beethoven by hearing it just once.
A trip to visit relatives in NewYork in 1985 introduced him to hip hop and more importantly to turntablism. He immediately went home and began bugging his parents for a pair of turn tables for his next birthday. And that's how hip hop came to live with him. ")
3 Years later he moved to Mississauga, where he would stay up every Friday night,
like thousands of other kids, listening to Chris Sheppard live from RPM. But unlike most other kids, he wasn't just listening, he was learning. It was mostly house, but it was enough to help him teach himself how to DJ.... well that, and visits from his favourite uncle (AKA AB Rankin)who always brought the latest reggae and soca mix tapes with him from N.Y. for his music-hungry nephew.
1989 was a good year.
It was the year J.V. turned 11 years old. And that year his birthday present was a trip to Montreal to visit his aunt and uncle for summer vacation. His Aunt ran a video store, and his uncle ran the record shop. Walking through the front door of that shop for this 11 year old kid was like walking into another sort of heaven. Heaven with vinyl on the shelf from all his favourite artists and two record players on the counter. He played them so much his uncle ended up inviting him to play at a house party he was having and believe it or not that child rocked the party... and hasn't stopped since!
In 1995 he was at Camilla school during b-ball tryouts listening to music on his (then cool) GIANT Ghetto Blaster, when another kid came up and asked who had made the mixtape. When JV told him it was him, they became fast friends. The kid told him his name was Sean Fernandes (now DJ Ryder) he said he was into graphic design but wanted to learn how to spin. So J.V. showed him a few tricks and they formed a crew. They went from Termite Sound Crew (96-97), to X-content (97-99) and finally to Platinum Ice Soundcrew from (99-2002)
DJ Niceness played in Boston in September 2006 is now running with a new crew called The Creative Minds at work & CPC making BIG moves!
As for DJ Niceness (J.V.) he's still in love with the turntables, still rockin parties, has self taught himself how to produce. And even in his work, he used his knowledge of music to help enhance the shows and concerts of some of his favourite artists working as a light technician at the well known Government Entertainment Complex.
From child prodigy to a fully rounded man of music his love for the art form has only intensified. And his mixes?? Pure Niceness baby!
