He could have easily painted a pretty picture about his experiences, a la Howard Stern's Private Parts. ... Frankly I think it would be MORE foolish to have faked a story that attempted to convince the reader that he was something that he really isn't, because all that would do is just show off how conceited Jeff really is.

Kind of an extreme example. Private Parts was a self-addressed valentine written by someone who, despite all the I-have-a-small-dick jokes, genuinely thinks his shit DOESN'T stink and is ultradefensive about his (John Lydon voice) Public Imaaaaaaage. (He also believes no one but himself is entitled to a career in radio comedy, and this is coming from a 20-year listener. The show tanked when he got divorced, and worsened still when Jackie left.) In sharp contrast, the Jeffster not only KNOWS his shit stinks, he revels in a high-fiber diet and has set up a cottage industry selling his "wares".

There's a middle ground that Howchie and Jeff have yet to traverse. The former covers up his life with tales of his dog-loving trophy girlfriend, the latter seemingly has this bizarre need to confess everything. A little judicious editing wouldn't kill either of them, especially Jeff. I grew up reading Peanuts; I like my Charlie Browns fictional.

(Heh. There's an concept: Charlie Brown drawing autobio comics. His zig-zag-shirted form huddled over a drawing table, drawing angsty strips about what an utter cunt Lucy is. I'm totally using that.)

Jeff's writing style is more admirable to me than that of the exact opposite style: someone use their power as a writer to convince the reader/viewer how awesome they are and how much their opponents sucks dick, regardless of the facts.

Granted. Anyone in particular spring to mind? Comics-related, I mean. Other than Jabba The Film-Maker. (And Morgan Spurlock. I'll eat

"Provided his comic self is his real self, the boy's rather immature (He seems to bring a lot of his shit upon himself)."

Does this mean that bit where he's involved in a car accident where the alive-but-in-pain female driver's a mess and he basically stands there completely useless is for real?

I dunno... if you're as towering a loser in real life as Comic Jeff is, you'd be a fool to admit it (unless you're either getting paid for it either monetarily or with chicks who think you're Just So Sensitive). It's the reason why I steered clear of doing autobio comics past age 18.

However, his books are still really popular. The fact that Clumsy's in its third printing says a lot about Brown's popularity.

True dat. But how many copies were produced in each printing? Theoretically, there could only be maybe 30,000 copies of it out there. Granted, 30k fans is nothing to sneeze at, but...

"Three out of four people." Heh!

Vote for ABBY DENSON as Friends of Lulu's "Lulu of the Year"!!!

C'mon guys, she writes "Powerpuff Girls" comics for DC an' "Tough Love" an' she's cute as a bug's ear. A bug's ear with Higgins Black India ink under her fingernails and a steady supply of Hunt #102 pen nibs.

C'mon, don't let that "Dykes To Watch Out For" chick win. VOTE ABBY!! Pretend you're in Florida and DO IT TWICE!! Hurry!

True that; but there's being published, and then there's being published and then READ by someone other than some stuck-up Comics Journal reviewer. Self-absorption's a wonderful thing -- Morrissey made a mint from it (until Johnny Marr took off, anyway) -- but every so often one has to expand the cast of characters.

Unless you plan on adding a runty green spaceman who talks like Harvey Korman and calls everyone "dum-dum". That way lies madness...

PS - What's "joping" mean? I even Googled the word and got nothin'.
