email 1:ndoun@otenet.gr email 2:nickdoun@gmail.com NICK DOUNOUSSIS AND THE BACKBONE "Nick and the Backbone" is the band created by Nick Dounoussis, well known to blues audiences from his 25-years radical involvement in the Greek Blues scenery.He is considered to be the best Blues guitar player in Greece and one of a kind in Europe.His endless talent and unique musical action has turned Greek audiences to the Blues and helped establish the local scenery. Born and raised in Thessaloniki - Greece he first got involved with music in the late '70s. With his school buddies he co-founded Ghetto, playing rock'n' roll in the world later to be known as "indie" rock. During 1983-1984 he co-founded BLUES GANG-BLUES WIRE, the most significant Blues band in Greece at the time.A long discography , thousands of concerts in Greece and many appearances in European blues festivals ,along with hundreds of collaborations with blues legends such as John Hammond jr. ,Carey and Laurie Bell, Katie Webster , Big Time Sarah , Angela Brown and opening gigs for Albert King, Buddy Guy and many, many others. In 1996, Nick left the band and founded NICK AND THE BACKBONE . His guitar prowess led many people to believe that the formation of his own rock-blues band was inevitable, since his playing is absolutely top-notch in that genre. Many of his own compositions were injected into the new band's repertoire, along with songs from people like Freddie King , Muddy Waters, Albert King , B .B. King, Duke Robillard , the Fabulous Thunderbirds , Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins , Lonnie Mack , Eric Clapton and Jimmy Hendrix ,among others, presented with the BACKBONE's uniquely explosive style. From 1997 and on the group has been steadily backing Chicago blues legend Nick Gravenites in his Greek and European shows while also performing with famous blues artists such as Louisiana Red, Johnny Nicolas, Nellie Travis and Phil Guy. Their debut album came in 1999, entitled "CRACKIN UNDER PRESSURE" containing Nick's own songs and featuring Nick Gravenites on vocals. The album was hailed by local critics as a real merge of Chicago,British and Texas blues styles, paying equal tribute to the likes of Jimmy Reed as well as Clapton and SRV. It contains songs about friendship, love and communication between human beings with the album's title track, Cracking under pressure, totally inspired by the memories of the war in former Yugoslavia, projecting the fragile side of human nature. Come 2005 and , in a great reunion , Alex Apostolakis (drummer for the Blues Wire for 18 consecutive years and session player), joins the ranks of the Backbone. On bass Lazaros Lazaridis rounds out today's Backbone as a much-promising modern rock-blues outfit. Θεωρείται ο καλύτερος κιθαρίστας Blues στην Ελλάδα και ένα από ένας απο τους μοναδικούς του είδους στην Ευρώπη.Το αστείρευτο ταλέντο του και η μοναδική μουσική του δράση έχει προσελκύσει τα ελληνικά ακροατήρια στο Blues και συνέβαλε καθοριστικά στη διαμόρφωση της Ελληνικής μοντέρνας μουσικής σκηνής. Ο Νίκος Ντουνούσης πρωτοασχολήθηκε με τη μουσική στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 70. Με φίλους από το σχολείο ιδρύει το συγκρότημα GHETTO που κινείται στο χώρο της καθαρά ανεξάρτητης rock n roll σκηνής. Το 1983 συν-ιδρύει τους Blues Gang - Blues Wire και δημιουργούν τις δύο βασικές ζωντανές σκηνές της Θεσσαλονίκης, το Παραρλάμα '86-'90 και το club του Μύλου '91-'96. Μεγάλη δισκογραφία, συναυλίες σε όλη την Ελλάδα και Ευρώπη, έως το 1995, όταν ο Νίκος αποχωρεί, για να συστήσει το προσωπικό του τρίο NICK and the BACKBONE. Η κιθαριστική του δεινότητα έχει κατά πολλούς «ξεφύγει» από τα ελληνικά δεδομένα, γεγονός που καθιστά την δημιουργία του προσωπικού του group απόλυτα αναμενόμενη στα ακροατήρια του σύγχρονου rock-blues. Το πλούσιο ήδη προσωπικό υλικό του Νίκου Ντουνούση, διοχετεύεται στο νέο συγκρότημα μαζί με διασκευές από θρύλους της κιθάρας, όπως οι Freddie King , Muddy Waters, Albert King , B .B. King, Duke Robillard , the Fabulous Thunderbirds , Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins , Lonnie Mack , Eric Clapton και ο Jimmy Hendrix, που αποκτούν σάρκα και οστά στα χέρια του Νίκου και την «ηχητικά» εκρηκτική σφραγίδα των BACKBONE. Την περίοδο 1997-98 το γκρούπ πραγματοποιεί δύο επιτυχημένες περιοδείες σε συνεργασία με τον ελληνοαμερικανό θρύλο της γενιάς του Chicago Blues ,Nick Gravenites και συνεργάζεται με άλλους καλλιτέχνες του BLUES, όπωs o Louisiana Red, ο Johnny Nicolas η Nelly Travis και ο Phil Guy. Το 1999 κυκλοφορεί η πρώτη δισκογραφική δουλειά των NICK and the BACKBONE με τιτλo "Cracking Under Pressure" από την Ano Kato Records, σε συνθέσεις του Νίκου και με την συμμετοχή του Nick Gravenites στο τραγούδι. «Το Τexas blues συναντά το Chicago» γράφουν οι κριτικές του δίσκου, με ευρωπαϊκές πινελιές τύπου Eric Clapton απο τα χέρια του Νίκου και ωμό, δυνατό, «Τεξάνικο» τύπου SRV and DOUBLE TROUBLE ήχο.Το 2000 ακολουθεί μία επιτυχής συνεργασία με τον θρύλο του μπλούζ του Σικάγου Phil Guy με εμφανίσεις στα μπλούζ φεστιβάλ της Αθήνας και των Σκοπίων. Για το διάστημα 2001- 10 το συγκρότημα συνεχίζει τις εκρηκτικές του ζωντανές εμφανίσεις, κερδίζοντας όλο και περισσότερους φίλους στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Σταθμός στην σειρά των συναυλιών τους τα αφιερώματα στον JIMMY HENDRIX και τον STEVΙE RAY VAUGHAN, που συζητήθηκαν πολύ από τα ακροατήρια που τα παρακολούθησαν σε διάφορες ελληνικές πόλεις.
