It started out as a hobby. Nothing more than something to do on the weekend with his buddies. Its funny how a hobby can turn into a passion, and even obsession. Thats what music is to Nick Gibson, the hottest singer, guitar player, songwriter, and entertainer to come out of Stillwater, OK since Garth Brooks. You may think thats a strong, maybe even impossible comparison, but thats according to more than just a few people. Nick and his band have been tearing up the local honky tonks and college bars in Stillwater and all around Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas for the past few years, and people are talking.
I never wanted to be any sort of guitarist. I just wanted to be able to play rhythm and sing along to Garth Brooks songs. Then one day my best friend Mike gave me a Stevie Ray Vaughan CD, and thats when all this craziness started! laughs Nick. Although Nick has a strong command of the Blues, his love of country music runs deep and started at an early age. Raised on the music of Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt, Mark Chesnutt, Tracy Lawrence, and Joe Diffie, its no wonder that he loves country music. My grandpa is probably the earliest musical influence I have. I can remember going on road trips with him and singing along to country radio. He would always ask me what artist we were singing along with, and I can remember telling him the names of all my influences. Its funny how they have stuck with me all these years, said Nick. Stuck with him is an understatement. Its very evident in his music today that he was influenced by the country artists of the 90s. Just ask anyone from Stillwater!
Stillwater, OK has a great musical history. Most notably would be the reining king of country music, Garth Brooks. As a matter of fact, Garth is the reason Nick found himself in Stillwater. After high school, I wasnt sure that I wanted to go to college. I wanted to run off to Nashville and run down my dreams, but everyone I knew was going to college and that was the practical thing to do so off I went. I chose Oklahoma State because of the music scene here, but the main deciding factor was because Garth went to school here, Nick said. After three years of struggling with college and his dreams, Nick finally decided it was unfair to both to not give either 100% of himself and left school for music.
The past few years have seen Nick and his band the Can't Hardly Playboys grow from a few guys with instruments to one of the hottest up and coming acts in Stillwater! In April of 2008, Nick and the band won the Oklahoma City leg of Kenny Chesney's Next Big Star competition which included the opportunity to open for Kenny Chesney! On May 2nd, 2008, they were honored and privileged to open for Kenny Chesney and LeAnn Rimes at the Ford Center infront of 14,000+ people!
Nick and the band have also had opportunities to open for more than just Kenny Chesney and LeAnn Rimes! Dierks Bentley, Pat Green, Wade Hayes, Jason Boland, Kevin Fowler, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jack Ingram, Randy Rogers, Stoney LaRue, Wade Bowen, Reckless Kelly, Double Trouble, Jonny Lang, Indigenous, and No Justice are just a few acts the guys have shared the stage with, and the band just gets better with time. Nick describes his music as country music mixed with a little rock and a little blues. Sound familiar? The combination of his high energy show, filled with original music and a great selection of cover tunes, leaves people wanting more, and more, and more, and more...
Trust me, this is one entertainer you dont want to miss!
Nick Gibson would like to thank Doug Sewell at Sewell Amps, Dale Clark at Glendale Guitars, and Dusty Nelson at Robert Keeley Electronics.
