Influences include our surroundings, people, culture, social groups, emotions, sound, art, theatre, film.
Each show is unique as we like to react to our surroundings through music, meaning each show is freshly improvised on the spot. Vocally I use a mic an Jam man pedal to produce 3 part harmonies. Jon Ruddick uses a variety of equipment an samples to produce layers of beats and landscapes.
Musical influences range from all styles of music such as Jazz, Reggae, dub, prog, folk...etc
Its extremely hard for me to describe the style of music that we produce, I suppose its source of sound is electronic and so in many ways we do fall into thats catagory. But our tools often vary as its a case of finding out what its is we want to express an which tools will allow us to be as experiemntal as possible.
Rhymney Valley born and bread, one of the few to leave with ambition and aspirations still intact. Studied at Rhymney Comprehensive school, where I learned to hate the welsh language and be embarrassed to be seen in choir practice at lunch time. I suppose it was lack of culture and lack of enthusiasm from teachers (what can I say they're all probably over worked and under payed).
Community Music Wales came to the rescue in 1998 a program designed to teach and inspire youngsters about the real world of music. Also a way to enable youngsters to form bands, using the highest quality equipment and practice space.
In using this program as a tool I gained my very first stage performance at Blackwood Miners only to play the night before the 'Lost Prophets' you can imagine I felt like a star in the making.
Anyhow I suppose fame wasn't for me, as I now live humbly on the edge in Cardiff, ever nurturing my love for music an dance. Currently working alongside John Ruddick ( SAAB) Darren Williams (Kaskie front man DOHM) an not forgetting the folk infused four piece Rescue Party founded by Daniel Barnet (CircaRegnatonat Front man).
Future projects to look out for 'Fallen Painting' which is an umbrella of collaborations all abiding to the rules of the DOHM as it was taken from one of they're songs. More folk to be heard which is Nickie alone and a guitar, for the record I am now a raging welsh wannaby speaker, there's hope for all of us.
Im currently living and working in Inverness, I plan on collaborating with musicians from here as well as back in Cardiff. At this moment in time Im in the process of sourcing out a recording space to cut a mini ep of my solo folk stuff. I will keep you all up to date on its progress.
I wanna use this space to advertise Peppermint Patti who have been supporting me for the last 4yrs, they consist of two young lovely ladies Helen and Anne who are deeply involved in Female fronted bands, so check out they're web site and take a look at other bands that they have put on in an around Cardiff. You can also catch them on Radio Wales every Sunday night on the Adam Walton show.
Thank you to everyone who came to the show in Chapter Arts on the 11th of Oct, we did experience some difficulty with our equipment but we managed to pull through alright please get in touch if you didn't get one of our free cd's as I will gladly pop one in the post for you.
"starting a set with an overload of sampled bird chatter is always good. This is Fallen Painting's intro, and quickly gives way to John Ruddick's slow, shuddering laptop beats, overlaid with Nicola Charles' icedrop vocal touches, riding high overhead, twisted into the music. Technical problems result in a curtailed performance; what's left is unsettling and beautiful enough. Like a ghost walking through you.
