Enya, Kate Bush so they say! Cannot see it myself though.
Although I have been involved in music, one way or another since I started piano lessons at 8, it was only about 6 years ago or so that I started writing songs, thanks to a brilliant musician/composer who I happened to know and from whom I took lessons for one year.
After giving up the piano at 12 in favour of the clarinet I felt drawn back to the piano some 20 years later. This time however instead of playing other peoples music I would sit at the piano and create my own melodies. Some years later having chanced upon my new found teacher, I was taught the art of songwriting.
As I was quite a bit older than most who start in this business, I thought I would simply write songs, however encouraged by people in the industry, some saying, well who else would sing your songs, or perhaps more flatteringly, well your voice suits your songs, I decided to take singing lessons and sing them myself. I have over a period of 3 or so years had my fair share of teachers in an attempt to develop what has been for me not the easiest of skills to master. Furthermore as my piano playing was quite mediocre, I searched for a piano accompanist but with little success and therefore as with the singing decided to further my piano skills.
I am now performing my songs when the opportunity arises and am shortly to release my debut mini album “Will & Destiny”.
As well as songwriting, I record and produce instrumentals which are generally piano and orchestral based. These are probably more classical in style. You can hear some clips on my website. www.nickiehart.co.uk.

I had a mother who read to me Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea, Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth, "Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath I had a Mother who read me lays Of ancient and gallant and golden days; Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe, Which every boy has a right to know I had a Mother who read me tales Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales, True to his trust till his tragic death, Faithfulness blent with his final breath. I had a Mother who read me the things That wholesome life to the boy heart brings — Stories that stir with an upward touch, Oh, that each mother of boys were such! You may have tangible wealth untold; Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold Richer than I you can never be — I had a Mother who read to me - Strickland Gillilan
To Touch the cup with eager lips and taste, not drain it; To woo and tempt and court a bliss -- and not attain it; To fondle and caress a joy, yet hold it lightly, Lest it become necessity and cling too tightly; To watch the sun set in the west without regretting; To hail its advent in the east -- the night forgetting; To smother care in happiness and grief in laughter; To hold the present close -- not questioning hereafter; To have enough to share -- to know the joy of giving; To thrill with all the sweets of life -- is living
