Released in May 2010, the dozen song set encapsulates all things Americana , from the opening notes of the Nashville-tinged "If I Tried," to the piano pop anthem "Freeze Out," to the acid jazz of "Spiritual Seasonings." At his core O'Connor considers himself foremost, a poet. "My poetry is rooted in blues, jazz, folk, and natural country. I then bring undertones and influences from the beatniks, hippies, rappers, and new millennium rockers." On the sadly overlooked … Back to the Sensitive Grounds (2007), the lone release from O'Connor's first project, the O'Combo, the then eighteen year-old composer's twelve original songs foreshadow greater things to come. On standout tracks like "On My Way," "Sensitive Grounds (I'm Bound)," and "Can't Be Tamed," we are given glimpse into the depths of Colorado's most promising new songwriter. To shape the sound and feel of Lady On Pink,, O'Connor enlisted veteran Nashville producer Clark Hagan, best know for a 1990s Grammy winning collaboration with Chet Atkins. On "Don't Stray," Hagan creates one of the record's signature tracks, masterfully melding infectious pop melody to folk sensibility, adding a hint of country compliments of John Macy's (Macy Sound Studio's owner) remarkable pedal steel playing. Lady In Pink's all-star production crew also includes guest mixer Mark Guerico and mastering engineer Jonathan Russell. Guerico engineered multi-platinum records for Elton John, Chicago, Jeff Beck, and others with his brother Jim at the fabled Caribou Ranch hidden in Colorado 's mountains. Russell is a Nashville veteran with Masterfonics Mastering, and coincidentally, Chet Atkins' grandson. Positive reviews of Lady In Pink from Westword, the Boulder Daily Camera, the Scene, and Colorado Music Buzz convinced KBCO to spin the record, and Positive Listening Radio produced a 20-minute feature on O'Connor in July 2010. Booking agents responded too by offering high profile slots at a Taste of Colorado, the Denver Rock -n-Roll Marathon, and the Strings & Wood 1st Anniversary Show. O'Connor is currently preparing to record his next record in 2011. It doesn't seem to get any simpler than that for Nick O'Connor with his new album, Lady in Pink. Though primarily a folk-rock artist, O'Connor's exploration of all instruments and song types creates some very unique music. It is not only easy-listening, but self-reflective. O'Connor's poetic lyrics and rhythmic guitar riffs produce beautiful songs, varyingly influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan ("Where Does the Road End?") or the acid rock sounds similar to David Bowie and the days of Ziggy Stardust ("Don't Stray"). The varied use of steel guitar, piano and harmonica works well throughout this album, adding to O'Connor's great vocals. Nick O'Connor's passion for his music can be heard in every song on Lady in Pink, but the album seems to have difficulty in connecting the songs between each other. It's difficult to hear some of the overarching ideas throughout the CD, but the songs themselves make up for this slight gap in fluidity, and the album still shines. Even though O'Connor does a great job, the musicians of Pilgrim Road really bring the album together with their inspiring drumbeats, jazz bass tones and authentic guitar solos. Lady in Pink is perfect for someone looking for some great easy-listening music. This album creates an atmosphere conducive to the high ideals Nick O'Connor is singing about: faith, hope, love and honesty. Anyone who wants simple but powerful music, this is this CD for them. -Chris Pepper-Yowell Lady In Pink CD Review, Westword, July 22, 2010 While Nick O'Connor is only 21 years old, the breadth and scope of his solo debut, Lady in Pink , has the feel of an album made by someone a good decade or two older. Although O'Connor, whose voice at times recalls that of Cat Stevens, has a solid roots and folk foundation, he also draws from a fairly wide pool of musical inspiration. He takes a stab at a rock anthem with "Freeze Out," dips into the funk on "My Debt Keep Comin' Back" and "Spiritual Seasonings," and delivers something of a Gerry Rafferty-meets-Bob Dylan foot-stomping tune with "Where Does the Road End?"
