| About Nick Rosen |
|
Nick Rosen is a freelance bassist/composer/improviser that resides in Sherman Oaks, CA. In 2002, Nick played a role in helping jazz legend Henry Grimes back onto the jazz scene after a 35 year break; he was a student of Mr. Grimes and also played in a band with him that featured Nels Cline (of Wilco), Vinny Golia, and Bobby Bradford. Nick has been featured in many major publications, including: the LA Times front page, The Hollywood Reporter, Jazz Times, the LA Weekly, and Vanity Fair. Nick was a featured soloist at the 2003 vision festival in New York City playing with bassist William Parkers big band (Henry also played bass at this concert, this being the first time that he had played in NY in over 30 years).
Currently Nick leads his own group, the Nick Rosen Ensemble, that plays all original compositions and arrangements; he also plays with the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, The Arthur Blythe Group, Lion of Panjshir, Judy Valencerina, Antoine Salem, The Meemies and Adam Rudolphs Organic Orchestra. He also currently collaborates with poet/writer Chris Abani; they are currently working on a full-length album. Nick’s tune "In her Smile" will be released internationally in September 2007 on the new Build an Ark record entitled "Dawn", on this record he is also featured on tunes with Big Black and Ralph "Buzzy" Jones. Other than Build an Ark, Nick plays in several other projects led by producer Carlos Nino which include the Life Force trio and Ammon Contact. Carlos Nino is also one of the co-producers along with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Nick for Nick's first full length album entitled "For People" that should be available by late 2008 and will feature all new compositions by Nick.
Nick has performed world premieres by Gavin Bryars and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and he played in a US premiere by Busotti. In March, 2007 Nick was invited to perform with legendary cellist Rohan de Saram playing a Xennaxis piece that was written for Mr. Saram. Nick has recorded with Ndugu Chancelor, Big Black, X-Ray Dog music, DOP, Charlie Hilton, Kim Richmond, and has performed with Billy Bang, Joe LaBarbera, The Chris Walden Big Band, Bennie Maupin, Bobby Bradford, Sherman Ferguson, Ches Smith, Azar Lawrence, Sonship Theus, Adam Benjamin, and Jim Keltner.
