Sounds Like
"LIVE MAY 3rd, 2009" two excerpts... one sounds like me improvising on a cello through computer effects. the other sounds like me beatboxing and singing through effects and looping it and doing stuff to it.
"Incidental music from Transport (2008)" sounds like a multitracked cello thing for a film-driven installation. One might hear some digital processing on the cello at points (they'd be absolutely correct.)
"LIVE MAY 29th, 2009" sounds like acoustic cello with live computer looping of said cello and granulation output through two regular amps, a smokey amp and a pair of distressed headphones (which have been outputted from a mixer overdriving the signal and cycling the sound through self-inputted feedback!)
"artifacts (I)" (2007) like a broken violin, bowed, plucked and rubbed and bludgeoned, (mic'd and contact mic'd) shot through inumerable electronic processings.
"outside summer is bursting at the seams (2007) like cello and dsp.
"unsent postcard" (2005) sounds like cello, field recordings, percussion, voice-mail messages--all processed
"red mylar" (2003) and "(lovesong for) white invincible" (2003-04) sound like pieces made exclusively from processed guitar sounds.
"tusk (2002)" sounds like processed hand drum sounds (ummm maybe)
Sometimes, I sound like a lot more like I've used many other things in a piece. That is because it is true
I'm a Toronto-based, cellist, composer and improvising musician, and my interests span a wide a range. This page mainly showcases my abstract electronic work, which is a big part of what I do.
In a live setting I generally work improvisationally with acoustic instruments (often featuring cello and wordless voice (sometimes including beatboxing) and realtime effects (via computer). On the other end of the spectrum, I'm fairly involved in creating acousmatic works. One of my more recent pieces, "Artifacts (I)" won the Canadian Electroacoustic Community's Jeux De Temps/ Times Play competition (2008) (not to be a bragger!)
In a less electronic capacity... I frequently work as a cellist alongside various things. Currently I perform in bands Picastro, I Have Eaten The City, and with singer Erika Werry.
Less frequent and one-off collaborations include Damo Suzuki, Sandro Perri, Rhys Chatham, Diane Labrosse, Anne Bourne, Lori Freedman, Eddie Prevost, Matt Brubeck, John Oswald, Laura Barrett and others
I also frequently work with theatre, film and intermedia art. For a portfolio of that work visit here.

hey Nick, how are you? Im glad to see that you're playing some solo stuff, I wish I could be there to hear it. I'm going to be in Calgary for a while, i'm signed on as a private music teacher starting in September. I hope the shows go well!
If you're curious at all, I'll be doing a MIDIed church pipe organ concert in Toronto May 12th downtown (info on my page). I figured that would pose some interest to your experimental side. We're going to demonstrate some of what's possible with the retrofit. There's apparently one in the Benton st. Baptist church in Kitchener as well.
Hey Nick Storring,
I just stopped by to thank you for the add, if I haven't already. It means a great deal to me. I will be updating my page in the begining of April after my trip to the studio in March, so if you get a moment stop by, I would love to hear from you!
Thanks,
Tim
