Bursting onto the local scene with his melodic folk-rock originals, Nick Tan is a young Singaporean singer-songwriter currently studying at the National University of Singapore.
His relationship with music started early in life when he was enrolled in electone lessons, which he tried to get out of every chance he got. Unsatisfied with repetitive exams scores, he took to improvising his own arrangements.
Inspired by the songs he listened to, the aspiring performer picked up a guitar in secondary school and wrote his first tune in a burst of youthful inspiration. There has been no turning back since. Hungry for experience, Nick did everything from playing the timpani in a Chinese orchestra to composing a soundtrack for an animated feature.
It all started when a friend asked him to fill a slot for a charity gig held at The Arts House. After getting a taste of his first performance, he decided to take a plunge and participate in Singapore Art Cafe’s Open Mike sessions. Armed only with a pick and some originals, this weekly event gave him a wealth of hands-on experience, and a hint of things to come.
After feedback from friends who encouraged him to venture further, he decided to expand his horizons by taking part in the Noise Singapore Apprenticeship program of 2008. Little did he realize that his compositions would impress local musician Kevin Mathews, who took him on as an apprentice.
Since then, he has performed at venues as diverse as the Esplanade to neighbourhood community centres, and also managed to secure a spot performing on national television for Mediacorp Channel 5‘s Live ‘n’ Loaded.
Currently, he is performing as much as possible with plans to release a possible EP in the future.
