"Composer, guitarist, teacher and vocalist, Nick Vasallo has been heavily involved in music since a teenager. Though he had received no formal music training before the age of 23, he composed and performed music in a variety of styles and platforms. His autodidactic early musical training and first experience in composition began as a teenager playing guitar, singing, and writing songs for Heavy Metal and Punk bands. His academic musical training began in 2003 at California State University East Bay in Hayward where he studied Music Theory, Harmony, Composition, Counterpoint, and Form & Analysis with composers: Frank LaRocca, Jeffrey Miller, and Rafael Hernandez. Vasallo was a prolific composer during his years at Cal State and even composed music for feature length films while writing for the university as well as his band, Antagony.
Vasallo's studies in Western Art Music, Heavy Metal, Film Music, Electronic, and World Music have enabled him to develop a unique voice in today's concert music world. His music has garnered several awards; both in the Classical, Film Music and Popular Music venues. Notable Awards: 2009-2010 San Francisco Choral Artists New Voices Award, 2008 UCSC Student Orchestral Composition Winner, 60x60 project - Pacific Rim Mix 2008-2009 selection, The 2008 David Cope Award for Music Composition Excellence, The Seattle Pianist Collective 2008 Final Pick, 2008 soundSCAPE Summer alternate, UCSC Chancellors Doctoral Fellowship Award, and UCSC Doctoral Tuition and Fee Fellowship, Best Release of 2000 for Antagony - KSJS radio 90.5 FM, New Jersey International Film Festival Selection "Sinful" musical score, and 2007 CSUEB Student Composers Competition. Vasallo's proclivity for bringing out relationships between concert music, indigenous music and popular music is the element within his music that makes it sound like a "breath of fresh air in gray academia." "Eclecticism" is a term Vasallo uses to define his style; he draws upon a variety of influences but finds a way to make them meld naturally."
Strange day. After watching a documentary about streakers suffering from over exposure, I took a nap. It was a short one. I woke up a midget. At first I was freaking out, jumping around, trying to reach the wall phone. It tired me out. So I sat on a foot stool and placed my face in my hands wondering why this had happened to me. In the middle of self-pitying I started noticing how much fun it was to kick and swing my feet. I was smiling again, and found myself running through the house at full speed... wrestling with my now giant puppy. Oh, the joy! I hadn't had so much fun in years! We laughed and played and laughed until we both fell asleep exhausted on the living room floor. Then I woke up and ruined the whole damned thing.
THE RETURN OF THE BAT
Specimen will bring their special brand of glam mayhem, The Batcave to London again.
After last year’s wildly-successful 25th anniversary Batcave event, The Batcave returns to its original spawning ground of London’s West End on Sunday July 19 for another night of blasphemy, lechery and blood.
Specimen (Fresh from a fantastic show at Leipzig’s Waves Gotik festival), the original Batcave instigators will headline the lurid frolics at the Embassy Club, (29 Old Burlington St, London W1S3AP) Also on the bill are original Batcavers Sexbeat, with DJs Hamish and Cavey Nick, cavorting from decks to decadence with the usual brutal, trouser-dropping surprises & suitably confronting & barbaric entertainment.
The 2009 Batcave will feature installations from exciting new artists of the ‘Dark London Underground’ and visuals from the upcoming ‘Welcome To The Batcave’ book, along with this year’s bitcrushed message from the creature in the Batcave Pram. All set in a spooky Bladerunner environment!
So dress to kill … prepare for a thrill & Expect the unexpected!
The Batcave will be open from 10pm till 3am. Tickets £15 available from www.ticketweb.co.uk and Resurrection Records.

If you would like to read a sample of one of the stories from ISLINGTON CROCODILES’ you can do that now as one of the stories is posted on the Islington Crocodiles blog page. RAIDERS is the disturbing story of Barwise and Micky.
As Graham Joyce says in his foreword to ISLINGTON CROCODILES, ‘This is the edge.’
Enjoy it, and let us know what you think, leave a comment.
Also, if you are interested in buying a copy of ISLINGTON CROCODILES you can, as before, do that here: http://host2.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/ttapress
